About

Community Conversations on Race: We have been working with a group of people in a collaborative effort to create safe space for a supported dialogue on race. The catalyst for this group to meet was a social media posting and the virtual conversations that followed. The aim, at its simplest, was to responsively create an opportunity for people with different and even opposing perspectives on issues of race to talk face to face and learn more about one another's thinking, experiences, and how these have informed their beliefs. Our initial working group has been comprised of diverse community members in terms of age, race, gender, income, education, and ethnicity. Each of the initial working group members became a participant in the first conversation and used their own personal collateral to extend invitation to one other person in the community. We have met, as a group of twenty, six times and plan to meet four more times for a total of ten sessions. We have partnered with an area filmmaker who will interview participants at the end of the series for reflections on the experience. The actual contents of the conversations are maintained confidentially.
