Mission

THE MISSION OF THE MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL (MNMRC) IS TO PRESERVE AND PROTECT MAUI NUI'S CORAL REEFS AND ITS INHABITANTS. OUR VISION: THE COASTAL WATERS OF MAUI NUI ARE CLEAN, CORAL REEFS ARE HEALTHY, AND NATIVE FISH ARE ABUNDANT.

About

WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM: CLEAN OCEAN WATER IS ESSENTIAL FOR HEALTHY CORAL REEFS AND VALUED FOR OCEAN RECREATION. TO HELP RESTORE CLEAN OCEAN WATER TO MAUI COUNTY'S COASTAL AREAS, MNMRC CO-MANAGES THE HUI O KA WAI OLA OCEAN WATER-QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NATURE CONSERVANCY, WEST MAUI RIDGE TO REEF AND THE STATE OF HAWAII DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CLEAN WATER DIVISION. THROUGHOUT 2018, THIS UNIQUE COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAM MONITORED OCEAN WATER QUALITY AT 39 LOCATIONS ALONG MAUI'S SOUTH AND WEST COASTS EVERY THREE WEEKS. DATA GATHERED BY HUI O KA WAI OLA VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF ALLOW US TO IDENTIFY AREAS OF IMPAIRED WATER QUALITY AND SEEK SOLUTIONS LEADING TO CLEAN WATER AND HEALTHIER CORAL REEFS. STATE AND COUNTY OFFICIALS HAVE WELCOMED THE AVAILABILITY OF SUFFICIENT DATA TO IDENTIFY SOURCES OF LAND-BASED SOURCES OF POLLUTION AND ARE WORKING WITH US TO FIND SOLUTIONS. IN LATE 2018, OUR TEAM BEGAN PREPARATIONS (INCLUDING EQUIPMENT PURCHASES) TO ADD TESTING FOR ENTEROCOCCI BACTERIA AT OUR SOUTH MAUI SITES IN 2019. A GRANT MADE IT POSSIBLE TO PURCHASE AN ELECTRONIC WATER QUALITY PROBE THAT WILL ALLOW US TO EXPAND THE REACH OF OUR WATER QUALITY TESTING, TO MONITOR DEEPER WATER AREAS AND ALONG TRANSECT LINES, AS WELL AS POTENTIALLY IMPROVE EFFICIENCIES IN OUR WATER TESTING EFFORTS.
