Connecting Hawaiʻi and the Pacific through contemporary art. Inspired by the unique histories of Hawai‘i, a gathering place for diverse peoples and ideas, Hawai‘i Contemporary connects communities from across our islands and regions united by the Pacific Ocean and beyond. As a collaborative art partner, we cultivate cultural alliances to showcase the Hawai‘i Triennial every three years and to celebrate contemporary art and ideas. The multi-site public exhibition is complemented by year-round public and education programs contributing to the local arts ecosystem, and affirming our commitment to creating an accessible gateway for contemporary art in Hawai‘i nei.

IN 2018, HONOLULU BIENNIAL FOUNDATION LAUNCHED NEW INITIATIVES, POP-UP EXHIBITIONS, TRAVELING SHOWS, FREE PUBLIC LECTURES AND EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS. ALL OF THESE PROGRAMS WERE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND SERVED OVER 950 PEOPLE IN HONOLULU, SAN FRANCISCO, AND WASHINGTON DC. HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2018: HBF LAUNCHED VISIONS OF THE FUTURE, A SERIES OF EXHIBITIONS, PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND CREATIVE INITIATIVES EXAMINING OUR MOST BASIC NEEDS AND WHAT UNITES HUMANITY, GLOBALLY; HB19 ARTIST BERNICE AKAMINE (KANAKA MAOLI | HAWAII) TRACED QUEEN LILIUOKALANIS JOURNEY TO SAN FRANCISCO AND THEN WASHINGTON, D.C. TO ADVOCATE FOR HER PEOPLE FOLLOWING THE OVERTHROW OF THE KINGDOM OF HAWAI'I IN 1893 WITH CAPSULE EXHIBITIONS OF HER WORKS KALO AND KU'U ONE HANAU; HB19 ARTIST NATALIE ROBERTSON (NGATI POROU, CLANN DHNNCHAIDH | AOTEAROA) VISITED OAHU TO RESEARCH HER HB19 COMMISSION AND GAVE A FREE, PUBLIC TALK ON HER PHOTOGRAPHIC AND MOVING IMAGE PRACTICE; HB19 ARTIST CHENTA LAURY (AFRICAN-AMERICAN | HAWAII) HOSTED A FREE WET FELTING WORKSHOP; HB19 ARTIST ROSANNA RAYMOND (SAMOA, TUVALU | AOTEAROA), WHILE ON O'AHU DOING RESEARCH FOR HER NEW SAVAGE KLUB HQ FOR HB19, GAVE A FREE AND PUBLIC ARTIST TALK AND POETRY READING AT HAWAI'I STATE ART MUSEUM. HB19 ARTIST MARIANNE NICOLSON (MUSGAMAKW DZAWADAENUXW | CANADA) GAVE A FREE ARTIST TALK ABOUT HOW SHE USES ART AS A PLATFORM FOR ACTIVISM. IN ADDITION TO THESE PUBLIC PROGRAMS, HBF PREPARED FOR THE 2019 HONOLULU BIENNIAL (MARCH 8 - MAY 5, 2019), WHICH WILL FEATURE 47 ARTISTS AND ARTIST COLLECTIVES FROM HAWAII, THE PACIFIC, ASIA AND THE AMERICAS ACROSS 10 EXHIBITION SITES IN HONOLULU.
