Mission

To provide after school programs for middle and high school youth in low-income families to help close learning gaps during the out-of-school hours and prepare underserved youth for college and career.

About

Youth enrollment & participation: served 308 middle and high school youth in Harrisonburg City during the 2018-2019 program year across three program sites (Skyline Middle, Thomas Harrison Middle and Harrisonburg High). We successfully launched a new program site at Thomas Harrison Middle School, continued to expand our high school program to 10th graders and added summer programming. More than eighty percent (80%) of participants were from low-income families, demonstrating a need for OTRC's program services to help close the educational gaps they experience during the out-of-school hours. We have now served 522 total youth since launching our first program in September 2015. Enrolled youth maintain an 80% daily average attendance rate. On average, a middle school youth participant gains 200 extra hours of learning time during the year, about a 15% increase than underserved youth who do not participate. OTRC youth receive academic support, leadership and workforce skill development, college and career enrichment and are connected to a network of caring adults who serve as youth leaders, community teachers, academic coaches and more.
