About

The Nebraska Forest Service, along with the US Fish & Wildlife Service funded the SANDHILLS WEED MANAGEMENT AREA to educate and assist landowners in the early detection of invasive weeds, wildlife and fish and help implement controls within the sandhills area of Nebraska. The Nebraska Environmental Trust supported the Fishery Restoration on the Cedar River project for the restoration of the river flow through construction of the fishway ladders to bypass the Spalding Dam. The NET also supports the evaluation and effectiveness of the 32 stabilized-streambanks installed in 2002-2005 on Cedar River that were partially funded by the Environmental Trust. The primary goals are to: 1)Quantify the streambanks erosion-rates with and without stabilization prior to and after dam failure. 2) Assess the current stability of streambanks with and without stabilization; and 3) Quantify the cost effectiveness of various practices used for streambank stabilization. Collaboration is between Loup Basin RC & D (Outreach)., University of Nebraska-Lincoln (technical assistance),and landowners in the watershed (transportation and accessibility to study sites). Funding from the Nebraska Enviromental Trust provides funds for field data collection and UNL graduate student support.
