The Nebraska Humane Society protects, saves and enriches the lives of animals in the communities we serve. NHS is physically located in Douglas County, in Omaha, Nebraska, a 13-acre campus comprised of five buildings. The service area includes Douglas and Sarpy County in Nebraska. Services at the shelter are provided to any person in the Omaha metropolitan area. When situations warrant, rescues and other targeted animal rescue projects are carried out in greater Nebraska and western Iowa.

ANIMAL CONTROL - THE NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY (NHS) ACTS AS THE ANIMAL CONTROL AGENCY FOR THE GREATER OMAHA AREA. MUNICIPALITIES INCLUDE OMAHA, BELLEVUE, PAPILLION, SPRINGFIELD, RALSTON, LA VISTA, GRETNA, AND SARPY COUNTY, NEBRASKA. NHS ALSO ACTS AS THE ANIMAL LICENSING AGENCY FOR THE CITY OF OMAHA AND SARPY COUNTY. IN 2018, NHS RECEIVED 99,284 INCOMING CALLS RESULTING IN ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS BEING DISPATCHED 35,547 TIMES DURING THE YEAR. THESE CALLS INCLUDED REPORTS OF STRAY, INJURED OR DEAD ANIMALS, AND PROBLEMS WITH WILDLIFE. THERE WERE 8,057 INVESTIGATIONS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY, BARKING, BITES AND ABANDONMENTS. ADDITIONALLY, 752 CITATIONS WERE WRITTEN. IN 2018, 2,675 LOST PETS WERE RETURNED TO OWNERS, 188 RECEIVED A FREE RIDE HOME. ANIMAL LICENSING INCLUDED - DOG LICENSES ISSUED: 13,376 INTACT, 95,240 ALTERED. CAT LICENSES ISSUED: 437 INTACT, 41,607 ALTERED. POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DOGS - 110, DANGEROUS DOGS - 9, MINI PIG - 33. LICENSES FOR ANIMALS WERE PROVIDED AT NO CHARGE TO 3,327 COMPANION ANIMALS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS AGE 65 AND OLDER RESIDING IN BELLEVUE, PAPILLION, SPRINGFIELD, LAVISTA, UNINCORPORATED SARPY COUNTY AND WATERLOO. NO CHARGE LICENSES WERE ALSO PROVIDED TO 187 SERVICE DOGS AND 44 COMPANION SUPPORT PETS.
