About

2018 Accomplishments.Out of those individuals we calculated it was 38% Black/African-American, 10% Latinx, 7% Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% Native/American Indian, and 40% Caucasian. The gender of participants was 55% Male, 29% Female, 8% Trans woman, 3% Trans man, and 5% gender non-conforming. The sexual orientation was 40% heterosexual, 36% homosexual, and 24% other. The age range was 15% 18-24 yrs old, 23% 25-34yrs old, 37% 35-44 yrs old, and 25% 44 and above years old. The socio-economic status of all our participants that weve recorded have made anywhere from no income to $20,000 a year. In 2018 our small organization has handed out 445,859 syringes and had 318,627 syringes returned to us. That is a 71% return rate, which is very high in San Francisco. We are open now 38 hours a week, and are street level based with easy access, and are now serving an average of 1000 people a month. We have a team of street-based drug users that pick-up syringe litter daily throughout the neighborhood with a special contract to clean up the Ronald M George State Office Complex building in SF which houses the state supreme court. That specific team picks up an average of 4000 syringes a month off the streets of San Francisco. SFDUU also handed out over 750 vials of naloxone and trained almost 100 new people how to use naloxone in 2018. On top of that our staff has saved over 120 lives around our establishment with naloxone since we started. This all done by a team of people who use drugs. Our strategy is to remain on this path, pushing for the population to serve its own community and the greater community of San Francisco, with our objective being to be operated by people who use drugs. We have partnerships with a few organizations for public education purposes because we are known to have a good relationship with people who use drugs in this city, especially ones that are experiencing homelessness. We have been working with UCSF, Drug Policy Alliance, Harm Reduction Coalition, and other organizations to do exactly that. 1)UCSF Nursing Program: Every Semester we are paid to present our stories of what it is like to be experiencing homelessness, have a substance use issue, and to go to the hospital for medical needs, for the purpose of student nurses to better address our needs without stigma and discrimination. 2)Safer Inside: We were and still remain instrumental in the construction and education (giving tours) of the mock safe injection facility hosted at Glide. We were also present and represented on all the panels surrounding the mock safe injection facility, which hosted tours to all the residents and politicians of San Francisco. 3)Special Hearing of the Public Safety Supervisors Committee: Miss Ian, the director, gave her expert testimony to the reason why safe injection facilities would be a good idea for the city of San Francisco, and those ideas were then backed by five street based drug users who were organized to present by SFDUU.4)Know Overdose campaign: Harm Reduction Coalition is creating a campaign for overdose awareness that is funded by the Department of Public Health and will be released in August of this year. HRC wanted to use real people who really use drugs as the people in their campaign, showing people who care for each other, while also changing the narrative of hitting rock bottom idea in drug posters and education. SFDUU was instrumental in organizing the people who were ideal for this campaign. Letting people who use drugs be the face of a new de-stigmatized era. 5)Alliance for Collaborative Drug Checking (ACDC): A collaboration between SFDUU and Dope Project where we can collect samples of illicit substances and have UCSF run their mass spectrometer on them, so we can report back to the community about what is in their drug supply.SFDUU is run and operated by people who have been directly impacted by the drug war. The staff all are active drug users and many are people of color who have had trouble, themselves or with close friends and family members, with the justice system. We are working together to create an organization that uses the ideas of skill building and job readiness training to give people the tools to build the lives they want for themselves. We are just beginning in this new direction, but we agree with the assessment of Ms. Szalavitz and Ms. Burton that allowing people the right to learn from their mistakes and grow with a supportive environment is the best way forward. We have weekly meetings with participants and members where anyone can voice their concerns and suggestions. We have many different jobs that people can perform so everyone is pulling their weight and, maybe more importantly, feels like theyre pulling their weight and thus giving back to their community. Transparency from the top down is at an all-time high. And recently SFDUU assisted participants in designing and creating a budget for an outreach team that was then funded and has been running successfully for 6 months by those that designed it.
