Mission
La Cocina VA’s mission is to use the power of food as an agent of social and economic change, generating workforce and entrepreneurship development, as well as providing healthy food assistance in Washington DC metropolitan region. We train, certify and place unemployed low-income individuals, including women, immigrants, and veterans, in jobs in the foodservice industry. We support low-income entrepreneurs to launch food-related small businesses. We contribute to the growth of our local communities. We create careers by offering bilingual vocational and technical education to the underserved; we transform unemployment into full-employment and entrepreneurship in a very short period of time while providing healthy meals to our local neighbors in need.

IN 2018, MORE THAN 100 STUDENTS GRADUATED FROM OUR PROGRAMS AND RECEIVED INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS. WE HAVE OBTAINED 85% JOB PLACEMENT FOR GRADUATES AND 78% RETENTION RATE AFTER ONE YEAR OF PLACEMENT. THE AVERAGE HOURLY RATE OBTAINED IS $14.30 TO $21.00. PREVIOUSLY EMPLOYED OBTAIN AN AVERAGE 34% WAGE INCREASE. MORE THAN 50 EMPLOYER PARTNERS HIRE OUR GRADUATES. 100% OF GRADUATES SAID THEY WERE ABLE TO IMPROVE FINANCIAL HABITS AFTER TRAINING, 60% FOLLOW A MONTHLY BUDGET, AND 20% ARE ABLE TO SAVE MONEY AFTER SIX MONTHS OF EMPLOYMENT. 33% OF GRADUATES HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REDUCE DEBT.DURING 2018 THE STUDENTS OF THE CULINARY TRAINING PROGRAM HAVE PREPARED MORE THAN 12,000 HEALTHY MEALS THAT HAVE BEEN DONATED TO OTHER NEIGHBORS IN NEED.
