CENTENNIAL STATE BALLET'S PRIMARY EXEMPT PURPOSE IS TO INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION OF COMPASSIONATE LEADERS WHILE PRESENT THE HIGHEST QUALITY OF CLASSICAL DANCE TO AUDIENCES OF ALL AGES AND CULTURES THROUGH THE PRESENTATION OF PROFESSIONAL-STYLE PERFORMANCES, COMMUNITY OUTREACH, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS SUITABLE FOR ALL AGES, AS WELL AS CREATIVE PROGRAMMING AND INITIATIVES.

DURING 2018, THE COMPANY PRODUCED THREE MAIN-STAGE PROGRAMS - GALA PERFORMANCE (2 PERFORMANCES), THE FALL SHOWCASE (2 PERFORMANCES), AND THE NUTCRACKER (4 PERFORMANCES) - AND TWO ANCILLARY PROGRAMS SERVICING FAMILIES OF SMALLER CHILDREN.PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: THE GALA PERFORMANCE, FEATURING THE SLEEPING BEAUTY, CULMINATED THE COMPANYS 20TH ANNIVERSARY PERFORMANCE SEASON. THIS PRODUCTION CONSISTED OF A 3-ACT, CLASSICAL BALLET COMPOSED BY TCHAIKOVSKY AND ARRANGED BY CONDUCTOR RICK THOMAS. THE PERFORMANCES FEATURED 80 YOUTH DANCERS RANGING IN AGES FROM 5 TO 18 YEARS OLD (CULLED FROM LOCAL DANCE STUDIOS), 2 PROFESSIONAL GUEST ARTISTS, AND 9 TEEN/ADULT VOLUNTEER PERFORMERS. THE CHOREOGRAPHY WAS BASED ON THE ORIGINAL, 1890 PRODUCTION BY MARIUS PETIPA. THIS PRODUCTION MARKED OUR FIRST WITH AN IN-HOUSE ORCHESTRA COMPRISED OF FREELANCE PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS (WEVE PREVIOUSLY HIRED AMATEUR COMMUNITY ORCHESTRAS), PLUS CONDUCTOR, RICK THOMAS. THE NIWOT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TECHNICAL CREW WAS LED BY DAVID DENMAN (PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER AND LIGHTING DESIGNER) AND JASON WATKINS (STAGE TECHNOLOGY TEACHER). MR. DENMAN BRINGS HIS PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT BACKGROUND TO THIS YOUNG CREW. HE IS THE BUSINESS AGENT FOR THE I.A.T.S.E. LOCAL 229 SERVING NORTHERN COLORADO AND SOUTHERN WYOMING. ENIGMA CONCEPTS AND DESIGN CREATED THE SETS AND PROJECTIONS, AND VOLUNTEERS ALTERED COSTUMES AND BUILT PROPS. AUDIENCES TOTALED 834. VOLUNTEERS TOTALED 132, GIVING OVER 1,763 HOURS TO MAKE THIS PRODUCTION A REALITY.THE FALL SHOWCASE FEATURED A NEW, ORIGINAL BALLET, THE SECRET GARDEN, ADAPTED BY EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR KRISTIN KINGSLEY FROM THE BOOK BY FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT. THESE PERFORMANCES FEATURED 27 HIGH SCHOOL AGED PERFORMERS AND 1 PROFESSIONAL GUEST ARTIST. THE MUSIC WAS COMPRISED OF PIECES COMPOSED BY ROBERT SCHUMANN, EDWARD MACDOWELL, AND PERCY GRAINGER. THIS PRODUCTION PREMIERED AT LONGMONTS STEWART AUDITORIUM AT THE CITY OF LONGMONT MUSEUM, AND WAS ACCOMPANIED BY SOLO PIANIST DEVON NEWBURN. 2 PROFESSIONAL LIGHTING CREW MEMBERS AND 1 STUDENT ASSISTED IN THE LIGHTING FOR THIS PERFORMANCE. 21 VOLUNTEERS GAVE OVER 67 HOURS TO ALTER COSTUMES AND BUILD SETS AND PROPS. AUDIENCES TOTALED 467 AND AN INSPIRED DONOR GAVE A $1000 DONATION AT THE EVENT.OUR 7TH ANNUAL PRODUCTION OF THE NUTCRACKER FEATURED 105 YOUTH PERFORMERS RANGING IN AGES FROM 5 TO 18 YEARS OLD (CULLED FROM LOCAL DANCE STUDIOS), 1 PROFESSIONAL GUEST ARTIST, AND 10 ADULT VOLUNTEER PERFORMERS. THIS PERFORMANCE MARKED OUR FIRST NUTCRACKER WITH AN IN-HOUSE ORCHESTRA COMPRISED OF 27 FREELANCE PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS (WEVE PREVIOUSLY HIRED AMATEUR COMMUNITY ORCHESTRAS), PLUS CONDUCTOR, RICK THOMAS. THE NUTCRACKER IS A TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY BALLET AND WAS CHOREOGRAPHED BY KRISTEN DEMAREE, MATTHEW HELMS, KRISTIN KINGSLEY, AND STEPHANIE TULEY. THE NIWOT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TECHNICAL CREW WAS LED BY DAVID DENMAN (PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER AND LIGHTING DESIGNER) AND JASON WATKINS (STAGE TECHNOLOGY TEACHER). 75 VOLUNTEERS GAVE OVER 553 HOURS ALTERING COSTUMES, BUILDING SETS AND PROPS, AND OTHER WORK BEHIND-THE-SCENES TO MAKE THIS PRODUCTION A REALITY. SVVSD NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY STUDENTS USHERED AT THIS EVENT UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF VOLUNTEER KAREN KRUSE. AUDIENCES TOTALED 2771.ADDITIONAL ANNUAL ANCILLARY PROGRAMS INCLUDE PETIT BALLET (SPRING) AND THE SUGAR PLUM TEA PARTY (FALL). THESE PROGRAMS FOCUS ON SERVICING FAMILIES WITH SMALLER CHILDREN AND INCORPORATE EDUCATIONAL NARRATIVES TO KEEP YOUNG CHILDREN ENGAGED WHILE INTRODUCING THEM TO CLASSICAL BALLET. IN 2018 THE COMPANY EXPANDED THE SUGAR PLUM TEA PARTY TO 4 SEATINGS TO ACCOMMODATE INCREASED DEMAND. 43 VOLUNTEERS GAVE OVER 557 HOURS TO HELP US SERVE OUR 27 MOST ADVANCED YOUTH PERFORMERS AND OUR COMMUNITY. AUDIENCES TOTALED 182 FOR PETIT BALLET AND 834 FOR THE SUGAR PLUM TEA PARTY. PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: YOUTH PERFORMERS CULTIVATE A VARIETY OF SOFT SKILLS THAT HELP PREPARE THEM FOR THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS, WHETHER OR NOT THEY CHOOSE TO PURSUE DANCE AS A PROFESSIONAL CAREER. DURING THE REHEARSAL PROCESS, STUDENTS MUST LEARN TO BE ATTENTIVE, DETAIL-ORIENTED SELF-ADVOCATES WHO ARE AWARE OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES AND THE NEEDS OF THOSE AROUND THEM. THEY LEARN TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND TO RESPOND RESPECTFULLY AND KINDLY WHEN OTHERS NEED THEIR HELP. THEY DEVELOP A STRONG WORK ETHIC VIA THIS PROCESS, REMAINING COMMITTED TO THEIR OWN EXCELLENCE AS WELL AS THE COLLABORATIVE SUCCESS OF THE OVERALL PRODUCTION. DURING PERFORMANCE, THE STUDENTS MUST PERFORM WITH CLARITY AND HONESTY BEFORE LARGE AUDIENCES. THEY MUST REACT PROACTIVELY TO THE CHALLENGES THAT LIVE PERFORMANCE CAN BRING, BE IT A DROPPED PROP OR A MISSED NOTE IN THE ORCHESTRA. THROUGH LIVE PERFORMANCE, STUDENTS REALIZE THAT THEY CAN PREPARE AND WORK TO IMPROVE THEIR PERSONAL SUCCESS; HOWEVER, THE OVERALL SUCCESS OF THE PRODUCTION REQUIRES THE COLLABORATION OFHUNDREDS OF INDIVIDUALS, INCLUDING STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, STAGE HANDS, AND OTHER PERFORMERS. THESE ARE POWERFUL LESSONS THAT HELP OUR ALUM SUCCEED NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. ALUM MADELINE KING (2015) IS A UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AT BOULDER UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING MAJOR WHO WORKS WITH A TEAM OF RESEARCHERS TO CREATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF ROBOTS. FROM GRASPING DELICATE OBJECTS LIKE RASPBERRIES TO LIFTING HEAVY OBJECTS LIKE GROCERIES, THESE SOFT ROBOTS MAY HELP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARTIFICIAL MUSCLES FOR HUMAN-LIKE ROBOTS AND THE NEXT GENERATION OF PROSTHETIC LIMBS. ALUM RACHEL JORDAN (2015) GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AT BOULDER WITH A BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN DANCE AND PSYCHOLOGY IN MAY, 2019. OF THE FIVE 2018 ALUM, THREE WERE ACCEPTED INTO UNIVERSITY DANCE PROGRAMS UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA, UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, AND THE BOSTON CONSERVATORY OF BERKLEE). ONE PERFORMED WITH STATE STREET BALLET, A PROFESSIONAL BALLET COMPANY BASED IN SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA. OTHER STUDENTS CURRENTLY PERFORMING WITH THE COMPANY HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO SUMMER INTENSIVE BALLET PROGRAMS WITH COLORADO BALLET, KANSAS CITY BALLET, BOSTON BALLET, THE JILLANA SCHOOL, MILWAUKEE BALLET, AND BALLET AUSTIN. CENTENNIAL STATE BALLET ALSO CULTIVATES A THRIVING BOYS BALLET PROGRAM. BOYS IN BALLET DEVELOP STRENGTH, DISCIPLINE, STAMINA, BALANCE, AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS. THE CHALLENGE, EFFORT, AND CAMARADERIE DURING REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES ARE WHAT MOTIVATE AND EXCITE OUR YOUNG GENTLEMEN TO BECOME STRONG MALE ROLE MODELS IN BOTH THE BALLET WORLD AND THEIR RESPECTIVE COMMUNITIES.IN 2018 CENTENNIAL STATE BALLETS BOARD OF DIRECTORS COMMITTED TO EXPANDING THE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED TO STUDENTS BASED ON PROVEN FINANCIAL NEED AND MERIT. CENTENNIAL STATE BALLET IS PROUD TO REPORT 100% BOARD GIVING VIA DIRECT CONTRIBUTIONS, IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS OF GOODS OR SERVICES, AND/OR VOLUNTEERISM. CENTENNIAL STATE BALLETS COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS SERVE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENTS, TEACHERS, FAMILIES, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND LIFELONG LEARNERS. IN 2018 THESE PROGRAMS SERVED OVER 300 INDIVIDUALS. THE NUTCRACKER STORYTIME WAS HELD AT THE CARBON VALLEY LIBRARY IN FIRESTONE AND THE ERIE COMMUNITY LIBRARY. OUTREACH PERFORMANCES OF THE SLEEPING BEAUTY WERE PRESENTED AT EAGLE CREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, LEGACY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, TWIN PEAKS CHARTER SCHOOL, ATRIA SENIOR LIVING, AND THE LONGMONT PUBLIC LIBRARY. 68 VOLUNTEERS GAVE OVER 145 HOURS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE EVENTS.COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS PROVIDE OUR YOUTH PERFORMERS WITH ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO INTERACT DIRECTLY WITH THE COMMUNITY AND GIVE YOUNG DANCERS A VENUE TO PRACTICE BEING COMMUNITY LEADERS. THESE EVENTS INCLUDE: THE LONGMONT PARADE OF LIGHTS, THE CALLAHAN HOUSE HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE, THE LONGMONT HALLOWEEN PARADE, ARTWALK LONGMONT, UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY, VOLUNTEER FAIR AT THE LONGMONT PUBLIC LIBRARY, AND LONGMONT PRIDEFEST.CENTENNIAL STATE BALLET IS PROUD TO BE A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE LONGMONT PERFORMING ARTS INITIATIVE (LPAI). LPAI IS A COLLABORATIVE GROUP FOCUSED TOWARDS THE ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT OF THE PERFORMING ARTS AND IS COMPRISED OF LONGMONTS MAJOR NONPROFIT PERFORMING ARTS ORGANIZATIONS. CURRENT MEMBERS INCLUDE CENTENNIAL STATE BALLET, LONGMONT CHORALE, LONGMONT CONCERT BAND, LONGMONT SYMPHONY, LONGMONT YOUTH SYMPHONY, AND LONGS PEAK CHORUS. WE BELIEVE A NEED EXISTS FOR A STRONG PERFORMING ARTS PRESENCE THAT PROVIDES ENTERTAINMENT AND OTHER ARTS-RELATED SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY. BY CREATING, COLLABORATING, AND COMMUNICATING COOPERATIVELY, WE ARE ABLE TO EXTENT AND UNIFY OUR VOICE IN SUPPORT OF ALL PERFORMING ARTS IN LONGMONT AND THE GREATER NORTHERN COLORADO COMMUNITY.
