HEA's adult education program serves approximately 300 adult learners annually in literacy, high school equivalency (HSE), English language learning, and remediation programs. Using an online, distance learning instructional tool paired with regular support, a 15-hour orientation and targeted face-to-face instruction, HSE coaches support students in reaching the goal of attaining a high school diploma. In addition, 50 trained volunteer tutor/mentors are available for one-on-one tutoring support for struggling adult learners through the Elkhart Literacy Project. HEA adult education is supported by a grant through the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (IDWD) and an endowment managed by the Community Foundation of Elkhart County. As a state-funded adult education program, HEA meets the performance requirements of the state and is part of the Indiana Region 2 adult education consortium. This ensures high quality programming for adult learners. HEA is currently the only program in the Indiana Region 2 (5-counties in northern Indiana) that offers high school equivalency preparation in solely a distance learning setting.
