About
BE KIND: AT THE CORE OF THE PROGRAM IS THE BE KIND PLEDGE TO HELP KIDS UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE KIND BY PLEDGING TO BE ENCOURAGING, SUPPORTIVE, POSITIVE, HELPFUL, HONEST, CONSIDERATE, THANKFUL, RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, AND A FRIEND. THEY LEARN AND PRACTICE THE EMOTIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS NEEDED TO MAKE THESE VALUES AN INTEGRAL AND ONGOING PART OF THEIR LIVES. IT IS A POSITIVE, ACTION-BASED, INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR AMELIORATING UNWANTED SCHOOL AND PERSONAL BEHAVIOR, OFTEN MANIFESTED AS BULLYING, AND LEARN WHAT IT MEANS FOR THEM TO "BE KIND PEOPLE." BRINGING THE PLEDGE TO LIFE IS THE BE KIND CREW, A GROUP OF GIFTED YOUNG HIP HOP PERFORMERS WHO IMAGINATIVELY CONVEY THE KINDNESS MESSAGE AND CONNECT WITH STUDENTS IN CONTEMPORARY WAYS THAT KIDS FIND ENGAGING, (CONT. ON SCH. O)RELEVANT AND FUN. THEY SERVE AS POSITIVE AND AMAZINGLY "COOL" BEHAVIOR ROLE MODELS FOR STUDENTS. THE BE KIND BREAK ONLINE PROGRAM PROVIDES MONTHLY LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH, AND EXERCISE ACTIVITIES THAT COMBINE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT SKILLS WITH COMMON CORE STANDARDS-AVAILABLE FOR TEACHERS TO USE IN THEIR LESSON PLANS. DURING THE 2017-18 SCHOOL YEAR, THE PROGRAM OPERATED IN MULTIPLE MARKETS WITH A COMBINATION OF BE KIND CREW ASSEMBLIES, DIRECT DELIVERIES OF CLASSROOM KINDNESS KITS, TEACHER RECOGNITION PROGRAMS, AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES, ONLINE PROGRAMS, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS. THE ONLINE PROGRAM, THE BE KIND BREAK, EXPANDED TO INCLUDE LESSONS LINKING CHARACTER EDUCATION WITH ACADEMIC LESSONS IN: WRITING, READING, SCIENCE, STEM, MATH, SOCIAL STUDIES, AND CIVICS AND WAS OFFERED TO ANY TEACHER IN AMERICA, FREE OF CHARGE. THE REACH WAS TO ALL 50 STATES. NATIONAL WRITING AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION CONTESTS, AS WELL AS COMMUNITY PAY-IT-FORWARD TO SHOW CIVIC APPRECIATION, WERE OFFERED TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO PRACTICE AND APPLY THEIR LEARNING.
