To increase agricultural and natural resource awareness, interest and education in Virginia through programs, exhibitions and competitions integral to the operation of the State Fair of Virginia.

The primary venue of successful execution of the mission is the State Fair of Virginia. The 2019 event included ten days of near perfect weather leading to 245,000 guests enjoying the event. In 2019, the State Fair of Virginia scholarship program rewarded young people for their hard work and achievement in thirty-nine sanctioned state fair competition areas through livestock competitions, 4-H & FFA competitions, Skills USA, and other competitions. Equine programs included a 4-H horse show, youth barrel race, draft horse & mule show & pull, cowboy mounted shooting, Virginia high school rodeo, open miniature horse show, team/calf racing, and dressage. Other activities of the State Fair included a wine competition with over 26 wineries participating with the submission of 129 entries and an educational exposition field trip program encouraging student groups to visit the State Fair and explore Virginia agriculture, natural resources, history, technology and art through hands-on experiences and interactive learning.
