About this organization
Mission
Cultivating prosperity for farms, business and communities through innovative environmental solutions.
About
In 2018, Sustainable Chesapeake collaborated with our partners to identify and demonstrate long-term solutions for clean water and thriving farms. For example, we worked with three custom applicators in Maryland and Pennsylvania to demonstrate the benefits of manure injection on approximately 100 Chesapeake Bay farms. Injecting manure instead of hand-applying it to the soil surface reduces the risk of manure nutrients being washed off of fields and into streams and rivers by rainfall. Sustainable Chesapeake also secured funding for financial and technical assistance that helped 11 small dairy farmers implement whole-farm conservation plans. Sustainable Chesapeake also worked to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of innovative new technologies, such as clean-technologies that can use poultry litter as a fuel to provide heat for poultry housing. In late 2018, we laid planned for the delivery of technical and financial assistance to farmers in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia to accelerate the adoption of soil health and advanced nutrient management practices in some of the Bay's most vulnerable landscapes.
