Mission

To secure and enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Crystal River and surrounding areas through education and awareness by concerned members of the community in cooperation with the City of Crystal River Florida and Citrus County Florida regarding issues affecting river access, regulations and water quality. The organization is actively engaged in clean-up initiatives in the Kings Bay region of the Crystal River.

About

During the year, the organization successfully restored over 8 acres of canals and planted over 54,000 native eelgrass plants. We also have unclogged over 300 spring vents and removed an estimated 200 million pounds of detrital material and lyngbya. Furthermore, an intensive public outreach campaign was started using our website and social media to help educate the community about the importance of this project. Save Crystal River also partnered again with the Crystal River Primary School and Duke Energy for a year-long project where students grew eelgrass in every classroom. This eelgrass farm was incorporated into all aspects of their curriculum from science to art class. Then at the end of the year the 5th grade was able to plant all this grass at the local waterfront park. This project has a lasting impact in creating long-term environmental stewards. This year we have also created traveling science kits to spread these lessons to other schools in the county.
