Mission
Our mission is to fight childhood malnutrition and improve outcomes for impoverished children in Haiti through a holistic, caregiver-centered approach that meets immediate needs for food and health care through live-in malnutrition and maternity centers and invests in families through education, training, and income-generating business activities.
About
Family preservation-children with severe acute malnutrition are admitted to a live-in center with a caregiver/family member. 273 beneficiaries, including women and children, were admitted into the recovery program where they received an average of 8 weeks of inpatient care. In addition to medical care for their child(ren), during their stay, each caregiver received an average of 144 hours of group education and individual mentoring in health, business, literacy, and gardening. SMH's psychologists and nurses coordinated 1,186 follow-up visits both (at home and/or at the center) for children and caregivers in the months and years after their recovery from severe acute malnutrition. Eighty-nine women graduates from the recovery program participated in the 48-hour business program on management, marketing, savings, and profits.
