About

OUR SEQUENTIAL EDUCATION PROJECT HAS ALLOWED US TO ENSURE A HIGHER QUALITY OF PROGRAM DELIVERY AND REDUCE UNNECESSARY DUPLICATION OF SERVICE: EACH 'STEP' IN THE SEQUENCE IS INTENDED FOR A SPECIFIC GRADE/AGE RANGE/COURSE TO CORRELATE WITH, FOR EXAMPLE IT SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES THE CHANCE A STUDENT THAT RECEIVED PLAY BY THE RULES IN 6TH GRADE WILL END UP HAVING THE SAME EXPERIENCE IN 7TH GRADE AND THEN 8TH GRADE. THIS IS SIGNIFICANT AS IT HAS PROVIDED A PATHWAY FOR KEEPING STUDENTS ENGAGED WITH LAW RELATED EDUCATION ON A RECURRING ANNUAL BASIS, RATHER THAN JUST LEAVING PROJECT REAL TO 'REACH THE STUDENTS WE CAN REACH' BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE. EFFECTS SEEM TO BE A NET-POSITIVE (CONTINUED ON SCH O) WITH MANY TEACHERS WE WORK WITH PROVIDING HIGH PRAISE.PLAY BY THE RULES - A PROGRAM DEVELOPED BY THE ALABAMA CENTER FOR LAW AND CIVIC EDUCATION, TEACHES MIDDLE SCHOOL AND AT-RISK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT 200 NEVADA LAWS COVERING TOPICS RELEVANT TO THEM SUCH AS ALCOHOL, DRUGS, WEAPONS, CURFEWS, AND INTERNET SAFETY. PLAY BY THE RULES IS IN 13 OF THE 17 COUNTIES IN NEVADA, EVERY 7TH GRADE U.S HISTORY CLASS IN WASHOE COUNTY AND IN 52 OF 59 MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN CLARK COUNTY. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, 60,000 STUDENTS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN PLAY BY THE RULES STATEWIDE. OUR PROGRAM IS ONE OF ONLY FIVE PLAY BY THE RULES PROGRAMS IN THE NATION AND THE ONLY ONE IN NEVADA. DURING FY18, OVER 20,000 STUDENTS LEARNED NEVADA'S LAWS AS IT PERTAINS TO THEIR DAILY LIVES; 120 SCHOOLS AND GROUPS OFFERED PLAY BY THE RULES STATEWIDE; AND OVER 350 TEACHERS AND 200 POLICE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN TRAINED TO CONDUCT PLAY BY THE RULES IN THE CLASSROOM.YOUR DAY IN COURT - PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS GRADES 4 - 12 TO STUDY THE STATE AND FEDERAL COURT SYSTEMS. FOLLOWING CLASSROOM DISCUSSION REGARDING THE COURTS, CLASSES SPEND A MORNING EXPERIENCING THE JUSTICE SYSTEM FIRST HAND. STUDENTS OBSERVE ACTUAL COURT PROCEEDINGS AND TALK WITH JUDGES AND OTHER COURT PERSONNEL. DURING FY18, OVER 5,000 STUDENTS EXPERIENCED COURT TOURS FIRST-HAND; ACTIVITIES WERE EXPANDED TO GRADE 4 AS PART OF A PILOT.REAL DRAMA - USING A CAST OF STUDENT ACTORS, REAL DRAMA PROVIDES A UNIQUE WAY FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO STUDY CURRENT, YET SOMETIMES CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES. OUR FIRST PLAY, HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS...OR IS IT? INTRODUCES THE TOPIC OF WHAT HAPPENS TO A FAMILY OF MIXED IMMIGRATION STATUS GOING THROUGH THE "SYSTEM." TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE PLAY, MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED CONTAINING A BRIEF HISTORY OF U.S. IMMIGRATION LAW AND THE CURRENT RESPONSIBILITIES OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND IMMIGRATION COURT. FOLLOWING EACH PERFORMANCE STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO ASK FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS OF A VOLUNTEER IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY. OUR SECOND PLAY AND THE ACCOMPANYING BOOK WERE DESIGNED FOR HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE CLASSES TO EXPLORE THE ISSUE OF PRIVACY, THE LAW, AND HOW TO PROTECT INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS. DURING FY18, WE HAD OVER 1,000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THE REAL DRAMA PERFORMANCES.
