About this organization
Mission
Our mission is to inspire and convince leaders in government, business and society to reduce carbon emissions now and advance the transition to a net zero emissions economy. The damage from climate change is accelerating. Climate change is happening faster, more dramatically, and with more impact on everyday life than anyone could have predicted. What we hoped wouldn't happen until 2030 is happening now. A swift, massive scale up of clean energy and technology, leveraging markets to transform how energy is created and used, is the only way to safeguard humanity. And, influencing those with the power to make this happen is what we do. The Climate Group has developed unrivaled expertise in building and managing coalitions of climate leaders to create tipping points for change.
About
During the 2018-19 fiscal year, The Climate Group made great strides in the fulfillment of our mission, to accelerate climate action, through our work with businesses and subnational governments, catalyzing a market and policy shift toward net zero emissions by 2050. Additional state and regional governments committed to deep decarbonization efforts by 2050 by joining the Under2 Coalition; a greater number of corporates joined our 100% renewable electricity RE100 campaign; an expanded EP100 now includes new workstreams, and new company joiners are urged to double their energy productivity; EV100 momentum continued to build in its second year, as the popularity of EVs in Europe grew and ignited an interest in electromobility within the US; and The Climate Group shared this success, with the aim of engendering further progress, during the 10th year anniversary of Climate Week NYC, the largest to date. Highlights On the Under2 front include: The Coalition saw a total of 72 states and regions participate in webinars, workshops and secondments to share and learn with peers. Under2 was also recognized as the international collaborative initiative with the greatest potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Nine highly industrialized regions created innovation teams to transition their industries to be low carbon. Three Brazilian states with land use challenges conducted stocktaking missions to identify policies and plans that would allow them to track emissions. Two Mexican, and one Brazilian, states received technical assistance to build their greenhouse gas inventories. Climate Week NYC 2018 was the largest Climate Week to date: Over 150 distinct events took place across the city, and the first-ever Climate Week NYC Hub hosted over 60 senior-level speakers, 10 sessions and over 550 attendees, facilitating an energized forum to tackle the challenges of climate leadership. Over the course of the week, critical topics such as: procuring renewable energy, the interplay of cities and businesses in the Zero Emission Vehicle Revolution, and leadership within the built environment were discussed. All three Business Actions campaigns had breakthrough years: RE100 reached 216 members from a wide range of sectors, an increase of more than 33% over the last year, representing over US$ 5. 4 trillion in combined revenue. The energy- critical Asia Pacific region accounts for over 40% of new joiners. By making the transitioning to 100% renewable electricity, members created an additional 228 TWh per year of demand for renewable energy, enough to power South Africa or Indonesia. Our global EP100 initiative, delivered in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy, now brings together 58 leading companies with over US$382 billion in combined revenue, all publicly committed to making smarter use of energy. During the last fiscal year, The Climate Group launched the EP100 Cooling Challenge, supported by K- CEP; EP100 members commit to scoping and identifying how to cool their operations as efficiently as possible. EV100 reached 60 forward- looking companies committed to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles and making electric transport the new normal by 2030. In February 2019, The Climate Group launched its first EV100 Progress and Insights Annual Report, showcasing companies' fleet and charging commitments, and the UK government became an international ambassador.
