About
COOL SCHOOL FOOD NYC IN NEW YORK CITY, THIS PROGRAM IS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN COALITION FOR HEALTHY SCHOOL FOOD AND THE NYC OFFICE OF FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES (OFNS). OFNS CONTINUES TO OFFER SCHOOLS THE ABILITY TO ADOPT AN ALTERNATIVE MENU THAT FEATURES PLANT-BASED RECIPES USUALLY TWICE PER WEEK OR A VEGETARIAN MENU. WE WORK WITH OFNS TO PROVIDE INPUT ON RECIPE DEVELOPMENT FOR THE ALTERNATE AND VEGETARIAN MENUS, AND IN ADDITION WE SUGGEST WAYS TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THE STANDARD MENU. OUR ADVOCACY HELPED TO FACILITATE THE ADDITION OF HUMMUS AND PRETZELS AS A PLANT-BASED ENTRE OPTION ON THE LUNCH MENU EVERY DAY IN ALL SCHOOLS. OTHER COMPONENTS TO OUR COOL SCHOOL FOOD PROGRAM IN NEW YORK CITY INCLUDE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE WHOLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, INCLUDING PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND FOOD SERVICE PERSONNEL. IN CONJUNCTION WITH SCHOOLS WHERE WE TEACH OUR FOOD UNEARTHED CURRICULUM AND OUR ADDITIONAL PARTNER VEGETARIAN SCHOOLS, WE CONDUCTED FIVE FAMILY DINNER NIGHTS, THREE PARENT WORKSHOPS AND THREE TEACHER TRAININGS. IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE NEW YORK CITY OFFICE OF FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES WE PROVIDED A TRAINING FEATURING MICHAEL GREGER, MD, FOR THE REGIONAL DIRECTORS, SUPERVISORS, AND MANAGERS, TOTALING ABOUT 500 STAFF FOOD SERVICE PERSONNEL. WE HAVE A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING AT THE NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY. WE PROVIDED TWO TRAININGS FOR ALL THE NEW AND RETURNING NURSING STUDENTS THAT INCLUDED A PRESENTATION ON PLANT-BASED MEDICINE AND LUNCH. THE FIRST TRAINING WAS DONE BY SAPANA SHAH, MD AND THE SECOND WAS DONE BY BONNIE HEPLER, RN. AT FOOD AND FINANCE HIGH SCHOOL IN MANHATTAN, WE HELD OUR VISITING VEGAN CHEF PROGRAM IN FOUR CLASSES TEACHING A TOTAL OF 80 JUNIORS AND SENIORS.
