SMCAA provided two statewide curriculum conferences attended by 223 teachers, curriculum leaders and administrators in 2018-2019. The focus for the year was on Instructional Leadership. The theme of the Fall Conference, November 12-13, 2018 was Instructional Leadership: Curriculum In Action. Nationally known expert on 'Visible Learning and Instructional Leadership', Kristen Anderson, was the keynote speaker and workshop presenter on Monday, November 12th. On Tuesday, participants were offered a study session on the five researched areas of instructional leadership and specific workshops on those areas (such as curriculum basics, assessment, and feedback). Breakout sessions were offered in the afternoon and were repeated. A total of 78 participants were in attendance. SMCAA also held a Winter Curriculum Symposium February 24 26, 2019. The focus of the Symposium was the overall performance on the state assessments in mathematics. The Symposium theme was You Know Your Scores, so Whats Next? The evening of the 24th included a study session on What Your Curriculum Needs to Address the Required Instructional Shifts in Mathematics. Attendees participated in a Monday morning study session on effective use of the Item Specifications Document led by Mr. Shaun Bates, State Director of Assessment and Mrs. Roblyn Melton, expert on assessment. Monday afternoon, four repeated breakout sessions were offered by standout district leaders in instruction and assessment. Then on Tuesday, February 26, Lisa Scroggs, State ELA Content Specialist, presented Writing Prompts and Scoring: How to Prepare for the MAP Writing Prompts. In total, 145 participants attended the Winter Symposium. Activity objective: To provide a platform, through state-wide conferences, to address the ongoing changes in curriculum, instruction, and assessment necessary for districts to prepare for teaching and learning shifts coming in the next two or more years.
