The My Path (Positive Choices, Academic Improvement, Taking Charge of My Future, and High Values) program is an afterschool program for court-referred juveniles. This program is funded through our county's JCPC. The age of the participants is 14-17 years old, and they are currently on probation. These youth are at-risk of failing, or dropping out of school and often live in poverty, with neglect and/or abuse, and live with addictions and incarcerations in the family. If interventions are not made in their life, they run the high risk of following the same pathway of poverty, crime, and addiction. The group meets two or three days per week after school and work on a curriculum that helps the teens to realize the connection from the trauma they have experienced, to the decisions they have made, thus teaching the kids how to make better choices. They work on social skills, independent living skills, and work with local businesses for job shadowing and with other agencies to offer educational opportunities. The goal of the program is for the youth to discover their interests and abilities and become aware of local opportunities that are available for them to have a better life for themselves and break the cycle of generational dependence.
