St. Mark Youth Enrichment is a non-profit community-based organization located in Dubuque, Iowa with the mission to provide innovative programs and services that cultivate the educational and social-emotional growth of youth and families. St. Mark puts this mission into action with quality before and after school and summer learning programs for K-5 students that focus on literacy, STEM, arts, social-emotional learning, and family engagement.St. Mark programs address the academic and social emotional needs of students located in our communities by offering safe and nurturing learning environments out of school time for students in need. (Continued on Schedule O)St. Mark does this through activities that engage students and families in active and innovative learning, enrichment opportunities, field trips that deepens community connection, social-emotional skill building, and making strong and healthy relationships.St. Mark is governed by a Board of Directors, made up of professionals in various fields, who provide guidance through committees: executive, governance, finance, education and programs, events, development and marketing, and building and grounds. Daily operations are led by an Executive Director.Before and After School ProgramsIn the 2018-2019 school year 111 students were served in the before school program and 241 students were served in the after school program. 93% of students at our most at-risk sites were regular attendees.At the end of the school year St. Mark staff were surveyed and rated the level of improvement they witness in students overall with very few exceptions; 90% of staff reported observing improvement in most students in reading and 70% in math.Students also progressed in social emotional skills as measured by Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA); 92% of students either maintained or improved within a typical or strength social emotional skill range. Community partners are crucial to the success of providing enriching learning environments. Partners provided enrichment opportunities to students on and off site. Summer Learning ProgramsSt. Mark Youth Enrichment Heroes Summer Academy was offered in 2019 for 6 weeks during the months of June-August for students in K-5th grade. Programs served 59 students in Western Dubuque and 117 in Dubuque with meals/snacks and extended care options available. Program is organized into grade-level classrooms lead by certified teachers with para-educators to support instruction and programming implementation. Paras are often college students or graduates in fields of education, social work, psychology, and other youth development fields. Program staff is trained through orientation and receive coaching from Education Coordinator to develop lessons and incorporate specific literacy and social emotional curriculum. Program Coordinators support modeling of best practice and coordinate parent communication. The City of Dubuque operates an AmeriCorps program and 5 members served with St. Mark working in the classrooms as para-educators and assisting in program organization and social emotional implementation.Data compiled for 2019 shows 91% of students maintained or increased their literacy skills over the 6 weeks. Students also progressed in social emotional skills as measured by Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA); 90% of students either maintained or improved within a typical or strength social emotional skill range. Parent involvement in the summer has greatly increased in comparison to previous summers. All families attend an orientation and the number of families engaging in enrichment and events has more than doubled in three years.
