EveryStep is a non-profit, community-based organization offering a wide range of health care and social support services that serve more than 65,000 Iowans in 47 Iowa counties. EveryStep's programs include hospice care (formerly known as HCI Care Services, HCI Hospice Care Services and Hospice With Heart), grief support services (including the Amanda the Panda program), and the EveryStep Giving Tree thrift store (formerly known as HCI Giving Tree). EveryStep's mission is: We empower individuals, support families and strengthen communities. Donor support helps ensure all who need EveryStep's services are able to receive it. From July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019, EveryStep was able to provide charity care, wishes and quality-of-life needs totaling $233,578. More than 700 EveryStep volunteers donated 72,433 hours of time to the organization's many programs, equal to $1,841,971 in value to the entire organization. In 2018-2019, EveryStep was named a Top Workplace by the Des Moines Register - the sixth time the organization has received the award, which is determined through a third-party survey conducted to employees. In 2018-2019, EveryStep Hospice provided 1,227 hospice patients with quality end-of-life care. Eight locally based hospice teams across 44 counties visited offered care and support to patients in their homes. Around-the-clock hospice care was provided at EveryStep's Kavanagh House on 56th Street hospice house in Des Moines, and at the organization's Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston. Kavanagh House on 56th Street offers 15 private patient rooms, and Greater Regional Hospice Home offers six private patient rooms. EveryStep Hospice offers specialized volunteer support to its patients and families through a variety of services, notably its Veteran-to-Veteran program, through which 47 honorary ceremonies were held for military veterans in the organization's care. In 2018-2019, EveryStep was a "We Honor Veterans Level 3" participant, noting the organization's commitment to providing specialized care and support to veterans. Other specialized volunteer support for hospice patients include a Life Review program through which conversations are recorded and given to patients/families as a gift for a long-lasting memory; Story Book program, through which specially trained volunteers assist the patient by recording the patient reading a story that can be shared with future generations via a CD and keepsake book; and the 11th Hour program, through which volunteers provide a quiet presence during the final hours of a patient's life. EveryStep Grief & Loss Services provides a wide range of free grief support resources to communities. Many of EveryStep's grief and loss support services are supported entirely by individual and corporate donations. In 2018-2019, EveryStep provided individuals and families with more than 1,728 support groups, programs and touchpoints offered hope and healing for grieving. Through EveryStep Grief & Loss Services' Amanda the Panda program, 300 "Cheer Boxes" containing meaningful gifts of remembrance and comfort were delivered to grieving families during the holiday season. During 2018-2019, EveryStep Giving Tree thrift store at 3330 100th Street in Urbandale, Iowa, received thousands of donations of gently used furniture, clothing, accessories, household items and home decor. More than $485,851 of goods were purchased at the store, with proceeds funding vital needs for EveryStep's non-profit programs, including hospice care, grief support and services and programs for children and families. With the exception of several paid staff, the store is operated by a dedicated corps of unpaid volunteers. EveryStep's employees are guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, and its hospice teams receive input and assistance from locally based volunteer advisory boards.
