About this organization
Mission
Southwest Baltimore Charter School (SBCS) exists to create extraordinary learning experiences that inspire the thoughtful, courageous, compassionate citizen in every child. SBCS was founded in 2005 by a group of neighborhood parents and teachers who wanted to create an exciting school environment for students in Baltimore's Southwestern district. One of the first public charter schools in Maryland, SBCS opened with 60 Kindergarteners and 1st grade students under the supervision of 10 faculty members. We currently enroll 417 active, inquisitive K-8th graders and employ 61 full-time and 9 part-time faculty and staff members. Expeditionary Learning Education (EL) is our school model. Based on principles that were established by Outward Bound, the EL school model challenges students to think critically and take active roles in their classrooms and communities. At SBCS, students engage in fieldwork that transforms them into scientists, urban planners, historians, and activists who collaborate with peers to develop creative, actionable solutions to real world problems. Through everyday, rigorous instruction, our students gain the academic and non-cognitive skills critical to college readiness and lifelong success - literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, creativity, compassion, active citizenship, and perseverance. EL aligns with Common Core Standards and provides an expanded curriculum accepted by Baltimore City Schools and the Maryland Department of Education. SBCS is an arts integration school and use Responsive Classroom and other research-based behavioral programs to address the needs of each child. SBCS attracts students from more than forty zip codes within Baltimore City. The great majority of our families reside in the Pigtown/Washington Village, Hollins Market, Union Square, Franklin Square, Poppleton, and Southwest neighborhoods. 90% of our students are African American, 7% are white, and 3% identify as other. 82% are eligible for free and reduced meals. Over 30% of our student body qualifies for Individualized Education Plans and/or 504 behavioral programs.
