The Lakes Area Humane Society is a voluntary membership organization of businesses and individuals who have formed an alliance for the purpose of promoting responsible pet care and to provide a safe and sheltering environment for lost and abandoned pets in Alexandria and surrounding communities. The Lakes Area Humane Society believes that the quality of life for pets and their humans is directly related to the caliber of work that is done by the organization. About
During 2018, the organization provided shelter to 699 animals and reunited 78 lost pets with their owners. Placed 473 pets in new, permanent homes or transferred to rescue. Each of these animals was tested for serious diseases, vaccinated and spayed/neutered before being adopted. Offered animal behavior counseling at no charge to individuals struggling with negative pet behaviors. In addition, 58 dogs and puppies were trained through our dog obedience program. Shelter staff provided 18 tours and presentations to childrens groups. Over 200 children learned about the importance of being kind to animals, animal safety, and responsible pet ownership and about the shelters many services.
