THE SWISS CENTER'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND ITS PRESIDENT ARE LEADING EFFORTS TO ATTRACT AND CONNECT MORE VISITORS IN PERSON AS WELL AS ONLINE AND THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA. IN MAY, THE SWISS CENTER ORGANIZED THREE DAYS OF VISITS FOR THE SWISS AMBASSADOR AND A DELEGATION FROM THE SWISS COUNCIL OF STATES WHICH IS SIMILAR TO OUR UNITED STATES SENATE., AND MEMBERS OF THE SWISS COUNCIL OF STATES WHICH IS SIMILAR TO OUR UNITED STATES SENATE. LEADING THE DELEGATION WAS THE PRESIDENT COUNCIL OF STATES KARIN KELLER-SUTTER. ALSO ATTENDING FROM THE COUNCIL OF STATES WERE SECOND VICE PRESIDENT GRALDINE SAVARY, ROBERT CRAMER, SERVING THE CANTON OF GENEVA, AND ANNE SEYDOUX-CHRISTE SERVING THE JURA. THOMAS AESCHI REPRESENTED THE SWISS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES KNOWN AS THE NATIONALRAT FROM THE CANTON OF ZUG. FROM THE SWISS EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON, D.C. WERE SWISS AMBASSADOR TO THE U.S. MARTIN DAHINDEN AND DANIEL FREIHOFER, HEAD OF ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL AFFAIRS AT THE EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON, D.C. EARLIER IN MAY, WE HOSTED THE CANTON OF GLARUS CLERK (RATSCHREIBER) HANSJRG DRST FOR THREE DAYS. HERR DRST AND THE SWISS CENTER ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO STRENGTHEN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN "OLD AND "NEW" GLARUS. THIS VISIT INCLUDED THE BEGINNING DISCUSSION OF THE 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF NEW GLARUS. IN JULY, THE SWISS CENTER HOSTED THE CANTON OF GLARUS GOVERNOR (LANDAMMANN) DR. ANDREA BETTIGA-SCHIESSER AND HIS WIFE WHO ALSO WANT CLOSER CONNECTIONS TO THE SWISS IN AMERICA AS WELL AS IN NEW GLARUS. AT THE SAME TIME WE HOSTED A DELEGATION FROM THE CITY OF EINSIEDELN WHICH INCLUDED EINSIEDELN MAYOR GREG FISCHER AND AUTHOR SUSANN BOSSHARD-KALIN. IN SEPTEMBER, PRESIDENT BETH ZURBUCHEN WAS INVITED TO ATTEND THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY GALA FOR THE SWISS CLUB TORONTO. THIS WAS AN EXCITING NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY AS ZURBUCHEN MET SWISS AMBASSADOR TO CANADA BEAT NOBS AND HONORARY CONSUL IN TORONTO BEAT GULDIMANN.NETWORKING AND CONNECTING CONTINUED AT SAENGERFEST 2018 IN TOLEDO. THE SWISS CENTER WAS A SPONSOR AND THE 3-DAY EVENT ALLOWED PRESIDENT ZURBUCHEN TO MEET WITH MANY OF THE 1,000 PLUS ATTENDEES FROM THE U.S. AND CANADA.PRESERVATION OF SWISS HERITAGE CONTINUES IN VARIOUS WAYS. SWISS CENTER BOARD DIRECTOR AND ARCHIVIST MENZI BEHRND-KLODT CONTINUES TO PROCESS ARCHIVAL DONATIONS AND HER FINDING AIDS ARE FOUND AT THE NATIONAL UNION CATALOG OF MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS IN WASHINGTON, DC, AND IN WORLDCAT, A UNION CATALOG THAT ITEMIZES THE COLLECTIONS OF 72,000 LIBRARIES IN. 170 COUNTRIES AND TERRITORIES. SWISS PAPERCUTTING CLASSES CONTINUE TO BE HELD AT THE SWISS CENTER. SCHERENSCHNITTE IS A SWISS ART FORM AND LINDA SCHIESSER OF NEW GLARUS HAS NOW HELD SIX CLASSES WITH APPROXIMATELY 10 PEOPLE AT EACH CLASS. THROUGH THE SWISS CENTER, DAMION BABLER IS IN HIS SECOND YEAR OF TEACHING AREA MIDDLE-SCHOOL CHILDREN THE ART OF FAHNENSCHWINGEN-WHICH IS SWISS FLAG THROWING. HE HAS TAUGHT 8 YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN THE BEGINNING MOVES OF WHAT IS A COMPETITIVE SPORT IN SWITZERLAND. "PROJECT STEREOGRAPHIC SWITZERLAND" IS MOVING INTO A NEW PHASE AS WE WORK WITH JARRYD LOWDER, AN AMERICAN RAISING HIS FAMILY IN SWITZERLAND. THE ART MUSEUM IN ZURICH, SWITZERLAND IS INTERESTING IN HOLDING AN EXHIBITION OF OUR STEREOVIEW COLLECTION WHICH IS POSSIBLY THE LARGEST SET OF SWISS STEREOVIEWS PRODUCED BY AMERICAN COMPANIES FROM 1092 THROUGH 1910. THE SWISS CENTER CONTINUES TO WELCOME MORE THAN 400 PEOPLE TO ITS FACILITY IN NEW GLARUS, WI. IN ADDITION, MORE THAN 500 PEOPLE CONTACTED THE SWISS CENTER THROUGH E-MAIL, TELEPHONE OR SOCIAL MEDIA SEEKING ADVICE ABOUT THEIR SWISS ROOTS. WE LISTENED TO THEIR NEEDS AND WORKED TO PROVIDE SUGGESTIONS AND TOOLS FOR THESE INDIVIDUALS TO BEGIN OR FURTHER THEIR SEARCH INTO THEIR SWISS ANCESTRY.
