Mission

Food Gatherers' mission is to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in the Washtenaw County community by: reducing food waste through the rescue and distribution of perishable and non-perishable food, coordinating with other hunger relief providers, and educating the public about hunger and developing new food resources. Food Gatherers also manages and operates a direct service Community Kitchen located in the Delonis Center in downtown Ann Arbor, a job training program in the food service industry to young people at risk of homelessness, and several other community food programs.

About

The organization procures unsellable, but edible, food from the food industry, receives direct donations of food, administers some government food programs (TEFAP/USDA/summer food programs), and purchases food from wholesalers. Food is sorted and packaged and delivered to more than 100 other nonprofit agencies such as homeless shelters, food pantries, low income housing, and after school programs, who then distribute the food to people in need throughout Washtenaw County. In the last fiscal year, we distributed nearly 6 million pounds of food, more than two-thirds of which was produce and protein items. Additionally, 357,389 was distributed to partner agencies in the form of credits for food purchasing and 17,000 in cash grants were awarded to partner agencies for capacity building activities.
