About this organization
Mission
Seedlings Braille Books for Children was founded in 1984 by Debra Bonde because braille books for children were scarce and expensive, often costing more than $100 for one book! Seedlings' ongoing goal is to increase the rate of braille literacy (currently at about 10%) by making braille materials available and affordable and ensuring children with vision loss access to many of the same books that their sighted peers enjoy. Seedlings gives more than half of its books away for free and distributes the rest for an average price of just $10 a book, offering children with vision loss equal opportunity to develop the literacy skills they need for success in school and in life.
About
The organization provided reading materials for braille readers in all 50 states and several foreign countries. In 2019, approximately 33,500 books, articles, and educational products were distributed at no cost or reduced cost to recipients. Volunteers provided information technology, transcribing and proofreading services at an estimated value of $18,365. Over 1,000 titles are offered in the organization's catalog and books are provided at each level of development, from toddler board books to classic literature for older children.
