About

REFUGEE SERVICES: Nationally, 2018 continued the trend begun in 2017 of historically low refugee arrivals. Nonetheless, Sacramento continued to serve significant numbers of newly arrived refugees in 2018, predominantly Special Immigrant Visa holders from Afghanistan. In 2018, we provided refugee resettlement services to 465 individuals. This number consisted primarily of Afghan SIV holders, but also included some Iraqi, Syrian, Ukrainian and refugees from other countries of origin. We provide assistance in securing health care, housing, and other services during the first 90-day arrival period. We are fortunate to have strong support from volunteers, local faith communities, and donors that help us ensure that adults receive ESL and employment services, and children are enrolled in school as we welcome them to our community. The Intensive Case Management program serves the most vulnerable refugees who require specialized services to stabilize and integrate into their new communities. Since the refugee resettlement program is time-limited to 90 days, the Intensive Case Management provides an extended 6-12 months of individualized support for refugees experiencing physical or mental health conditions or particular challenges with integration. In 2018, we supported 37 clients to access necessary services, resources, and community orientations to improve their vulnerability. In addition to direct client services, the Intensive Case Management program outreaches to local services providers and community members to share resources and build partnerships to enhance the successful integration of refugee clients. Additionally, we provided counseling and mental health services to 19 clients through our Family Trauma Intervention program. ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Through our partnership with Highlands Community Charter School, we provided English language classes to 142 new students. English classes are centrally located in the same building as our offices and serve learners at a wide range of English levels. Additionally, we served 39 clients, primarily female Afghan clients, through womens literacy classes offered at locations embedded in neighborhoods near to clients homes.
