About

IN 2018, THE WETLANDS INITIATIVE (TWI) WORKED TO RESTORE HIGH-QUALITY HABITAT ON NEW GROUND AT THE DIXON WATERFOWL REFUGE AND MIDEWIN NATIONAL TALLGRASS PRAIRIE WHILE EXPANDING COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS TO TACKLE URBAN WETLAND RESTORATION CHALLENGES ON BOTH THE ILLINOIS AND INDIANA SIDES OF THE CALUMET REGION. AT TWI'S DIXON REFUGE IN NORTH-CENTRAL ILLINOIS - ONE OF ONLY 39 RAMSAR WETLANDS OF INTERNATIONAL IMPORTANCE IN THE COUNTRY - A WEEKEND-LONG PUBLIC BIOBLITZ EVENT IN AUGUST RECORDED MORE THAN 900 SPECIES. ALSO, 2018 MARKED THE LAST YEAR OF INTENSIVE RESTORATION OF GLOBALLY RARE SAND PRAIRIE AND SAND SAVANNA ON THE SANDY HOLLOW TRACT ADDED TO THE REFUGE IN 2014. RARE BIRDS AND WILDLIFE ARE RESPONDING TO THE DEVELOPING HABITAT, AND TWI IS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE "BLANK SLATE" THE NEW PARCEL OFFERED TO CONDUCT TWO SEPARATE RESEARCH PROJECTS ON PRAIRIE RESTORATION AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF RETURNING FARMLAND TO NATIVE HABITAT.AT MIDEWIN NATIONAL TALLGRASS PRAIRIE, THE LARGEST PROTECTED OPEN SPACE IN THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN REGION AND THE NATION'S FIRST NATIONAL TALLGRASS PRAIRIE, TWI RAMPED UP RESTORATION DURING 2018 ON NEARLY 1,200 ACRES AS PART OF A VAST NEW PROJECT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE AND THE NATIONAL FOREST FOUNDATION. A YOUTH FIELD RESTORATION CREW OVERSEEN BY TWI ECOLOGISTS COMPLETED THE SECOND YEAR OF ON-THE-GROUND WORK ON THIS SEVEN-YEAR PROJECT, WHICH WILL ULTIMATELY TRANSFORM 1,800 ACRES ON MIDEWIN'S WEST SIDE BACK TO A LANDSCAPE OF DIVERSE NATIVE PRAIRIES AND WETLANDS. TWI ALSO CONTINUED A UNIQUE MILKWEED SEED PRODUCTION EFFORT AT BOTH MIDEWIN AND THE DIXON WATERFOWL REFUGE TO BENEFIT THE DECLINING MONARCH BUTTERFLY.FINALLY, TWI CARRIED OUT THE SECOND FULL YEAR OF RESTORATION AT INDIAN RIDGE MARSH, A HIGH-PRIORITY SITE IN THE URBAN AND INDUSTRIALIZED CALUMET REGION ON CHICAGO'S SOUTHEAST SIDE. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT AND AUDUBON GREAT LAKES, TWI CONTROLLED INVASIVE PLANTS AND INSTALLED NATIVE SPECIES ON 33 ACRES AND HELD MULTIPLE SUCCESSFUL VOLUNTEER DAYS TO ENGAGE THE SURROUNDING UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES IN RESTORING THIS ONCE-HEALTHY HEMI-MARSH SYSTEM. OVER THE PAST YEAR, TWI HAS ALSO HELPED ORGANIZE A COLLABORATIVE OF REGIONAL CONSERVATION GROUPS TO RESTORE THE WEST BRANCH OF THE LITTLE CALUMET RIVER IN INDIANA. OUR EFFORTS WILL FOCUS ON A 2,000-ACRE CORRIDOR OF THE RIVER'S FLOODPLAIN THAT IS USED FOR FLOODWATER STORAGE AND HAS GREAT POTENTIAL TO BE RESTORED TO HIGHER-QUALITY WETLAND HABITAT. SUCCESSFULLY REVITALIZING THESE REMNANT SITES THROUGH COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP COULD BE USED AS A MODEL ACROSS THE CALUMET TO REALIZE THE REGION'S GREAT CONSERVATION POTENTIAL AND RETURN MORE OF THE RICH BIODIVERSITY IT ONCE CONTAINED.
