Mission

A Safe Place is the sole provider of services exclusively addressing domestic violence in Lake County, Illinois. Through multi-faceted programs we assist victims in transforming their lives after domestic violence, prevent future abuse by addressing its root cause through abuser intervention programs, and educate the community about domestic violence and how we can all be involved in its end. It is our goal that by learning more about domestic violence, its causes, and appropriate responses, we can encourage a whole-community response to the domestic violence in our midst, breaking the cycle of domestic violence, thus creating safe and healthy communities

SHELTER & CRISIS ADVOCACY - WE PROVIDED 7,638 NIGHTS OF EMERGENCY SHELTER TO 108 ADULTS AND 111 CHILDREN. THIS INCLUDED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS WHO STAYED AT THE SHELTER FACILITY AS WELL AS 46 SURVIVORS AND THEIR CHILDREN WHO RECEIVED 491 NIGHTS OF SHELTER AT LOCAL HOTELS. (HOTEL SHELTER IS PROVIDED WHEN THERE IS NO ROOM AT THE AGENCY'S 33-BED EMERGENCY SHELTER.) WHILE AT THE SHELTER, SURVIVORS AND THEIR CHILDREN RECEIVE COUNSELING AND ADVOCACY SERVICES AS WELL AS FOOD, CLOTHING, AND OTHER BASIC NEEDS. A SAFE PLACE ALSO OPERATES A 24-HOUR CRISIS LINE OUT OF THE EMERGENCY SHELTER, ALSO PROVIDING IMMEDIATE IN-PERSON CRISIS COUNSELING FOR THOSE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER. SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE ANY TIME, DAY OR NIGHT, FOR SURVIVORS IN CRISIS OR CONCERNED FRIENDS OR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO ARE SEEKING INFORMATION ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND OUR SERVICES. DURING THE YEAR, WE HELPED 1,644 CALLERS TO OUR CRISIS LINE WITH SUPPORTIVE/CARING LISTENING/COUNSELING, INFORMATION, REFERRALS, AND ADVICE.
