LAND PRESERVATION - PROTECT NATURAL AREAS THROUGH ACQUISITION OR CONSERVATION EASEMENTS. LOST FLORA FENIN FEBRUARY, NLI PURCHASED 40 ACRES ALONG THE RACCOON CREEK IN WINNEBAGO COUNTY. NLI IS CALLING IT THE LOST FLORA FEN, BECAUSE A RARE PLANT WAS DISCOVERED THERE THAT HAD NOT BEEN SEEN IN THE COUNTY SINCE THE EARLY 1850'S BY MICHAEL BEBB, A WELL-KNOWN BOTANIST WITH MANY PLANTS NAMED AFTER HIM. THIS PROPERTY WAS PURCHASED WITH FUNDS FROM THE ILLINOIS CLEAN ENERGY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AND THROUGH A BEQUEST TO NLI IN MEMORY OF VERONICA AND STEVEN CRAMERAPPLE RIVER CANYONNLI ACQUIRED THE 149-ACRE RHODES PROPERTY IN JO DAVIESS COUNTY IN MAY. THE APPLE RIVER RUNS THROUGH THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE PROPERTY WITH CLIFF COMMUNITIES ALONG THE RIVER. THERE ARE REMNANT PRAIRIES, WOODLANDS AND FLOODPLAIN GRASSLAND, PROVIDING IMPORTANT HABITAT. GRANTS FROM THE GRAND VICTORIA FOUNDATION VITAL LANDS PROGRAM, ILLINOIS CLEAN ENERGY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, AND THE U.S. FISH & WILDLIFE SERVICE BAT MITIGATION GRANT PROGRAM WERE USED TO PURCHASE THE LAND. SILVER CREEK WOODSNLI EXPANDED OUR SILVER CREEK WOODS PRESERVE BY PURCHASING 35 ACRES ADJACENT TO THE PRESERVE IN AUGUST. THIS ADDITION PROTECTS MORE OF THE STREAM CORRIDOR AND GIVES ACCESS TO A PORTION OF THE PRESERVE WE COULD NOT ACCESS TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE OUR RESTORATION WORK. THE GRAND VICTORIA FOUNDATION, THROUGH THE VITAL LANDS PROGRAM, FUNDED THE ACQUISITION, AND ALSO FUNDS FOR INITIAL RESTORATION WORK, A STREAM BIOTIC SURVEY, AND A STREAM CROSSING FOR US TO BE ABLE TO MOVE EQUIPMENT TO THE NORTHWEST PART OF THIS PRESERVE. EXPANDING EXISTING PROTECTED AREAS IS PART OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN SO THAT WE CAN REDUCE FRAGMENTATION OF PROTECTED AREAS.
