SEE SCHEDULE O GOODWILL WAS FOUNDED IN 1902 IN BOSTON, MA BY REV. EDGAR J. HELMS, A METHODIST MINISTER AND EARLY SOCIAL INNOVATOR. HELMS COLLECTED UNWANTED HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND CLOTHING IN WEALTHIER AREAS OF THE CITY AND EMPLOYED JOBLESS MEN AND WOMEN TO REFURBISH THEM. INCOME FROM THE RESOLD GOODS PAID THE WORKER'S WAGES. THE SYSTEM WORKED, AND THE GOODWILL PHILOSOPHY OF "A HAND UP, NOT A HAND OUT" WAS BORN. TODAY REVEREND HELM'S PHILOSOPHY FLOURISHES AMONG 157 INDEPENDENT, COMMUNITY-BASED GOODWILL MEMBER AGENCIES IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA, AS WELL AS 14 INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATES IN OTHER COUNTRIES INCLUDING SOUTH KOREA, FINLAND, PHILIPPINES, TRINIDAD, VENEZUELA, THAILAND, BRAZIL, MEXICO, PANAMA, COSTA RICA AND URUGUAY.
