Mission

Kids' Turn San Diego was created 22 years ago to bring peace to families who could no longer communicate without conflict. With a mission of promoting, supporting and securing the well- being of children who are experiencing family separation, we are empowering children to be happier. When given the opportunity to talk about their experiences with a counselor who understands, children gain new skills to express their thoughts and feelings that can be implemented throughout their lives and parents gain insight about the impact of their current behaviors on their children. Our programs offer early intervention for children in need and who are at risk to suffer emotional difficulties that can last a lifetime and which impact individuals and communities, as children living in separated, divorced or military families have higher incidences of academic failure, mental health issues, drug and alcohol usage, engaging in unhealthy relationships and/or socially unacceptable behaviors.

About

In our Family Workshops for Separated and Divorced Families, we are changing family relationships in positive ways so children experiencing family separation have happier childhoods. The moment children step into our programs, they immediately see other children just like them&quot and quickly learn that their thoughts, feelings and family situations are similar to others, thus normalizing their experiences and helping them to see that there is &quotnothing wrong with them. When children feel like they fit in, they are more likely to be successful in school and tend to be healthier children. Parents learn new strategies to promote healthy communication and how to put their children at the forefront of family decisions. Grant funding supported program supplies and tuition reduction scholarships so lower income families had access to the program. The Step-Parent Success Support Group provided a safe place for step- parents to learn Family Workshop skills and strategies in a small support group setting. Continue the Conversation Classes offered an advanced refresher class of skill building for parents and step-parents.
