THROUGH THE NCDC DESIGN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD INITIATIVE (DYN), FORMERLY NAMED CITIZENSHIP IN ACTION, YOUTH ARE ENGAGED WITH THE WORLD AROUND THEM THROUGH A LENS OF THE CORE QUESTION; HOW DOES THE SHAPE THAT WE GIVE OUR CITY, IN TURN, SHAPE US? NCDC HAS BEEN AND IS CURRENTLY PREPARING DYN CURRICULUM FOR THE THE NASHVILLE METRO PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM STEAM PROGRAM FOR ALL 7TH AND 8TH GRADE CLASSES. THIS ONGOING ANNUAL CURRICULUM WILL REACH OVER 1,200 STUDENTS IN THE 2018-2019 ACADEMIC YEAR WITH THOUSANDS OVER FOLLOWING YEARS. ADDITIONALLY, THE INITIATIVE IMPACTS THEIR TEACHERS AND PARENTS AS WELL. THROUGH THE NCDC RECLAIMING PUBLIC SPACES (RPS) INITIATIVE; THE RPS ACTION ARM, TURBO, TACTICAL URBANISM ORGANIZERS, IS A GROUP THAT USES TACTICAL URBANISM METHODS, WHICH ARE SMALL AND OFTEN TEMPORARY CHANGES TO THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL IDEALLY TURN INTO PERMANENT CHANGE ACROSS THE CITY. WITH COOPERATION OF NEIGHBORBOOD AND METRO PLANNING DEPT, NCDC THRU TURBO ARE ESTABLISHING MORE POSITIVE CHANGES TO NASHVILLE'S BUILT ENVIRONMENT. DURING THE 2017-18 FISCAL YEAR, WITH COOPERATION OF NEIGHBORHOODS, METRO PLANNING DEPT, AND METRO PUBLIC WORKS, NCDC THRU TURBO INSTALLED STREETSCAPING AND TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES ALONG ARTHUR AVE IN ELIZABETH PARK, A PEDESTRIAN REFUGE AND POP-UP ART GALLERY AT HILLSBORO CIR AND BANDYWOOD DR., A TRAFFIC CIRCLE AND 10TH AVE S AND LAWRENCE, AND A PEDESTRIAN PLAZA AND CROSSWALKS ALONG GALLATIN AVE IN FRONT OF THE EAST BRANCH LIBRARY. THE NCDC SHAPING THE HEALTHY COMMUNITY (SHC) INITIATIVE, NOW IN ITS SECOND YEAR, INCLUDES RESEARCH AND DESIGN CONSULTATION ON THE IMPACT OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT ON PUBLIC HEALTH. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BOTH THE TN DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND THE TENNESSEE CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION, SHC RESULTED IN THE PRODUCTION OF 60 CASE STUDIES, AN ECONOMIC ROI TOOLKIT, SERIES OF HEALTHY TRANSECT INFO SHEETS, AND THE ACTIVE BUILDING GUIDELINES. OVER THE PAST YEAR WE HAVE ALSO PRESENTED AT OVER 20 PUBLIC FORUMS, COMMUNITY MEETINGS, BUSINESS GATHERINGS, AND STATE AND NATIONAL CONFERENCES HIGHLIGHTING THE WORK OF NASHVILLE WHILE EDUCATING POLICY MAKERS, CONCERNED CITIZENS, DESIGN PRACTITIONERS AND REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS ON PUBLIC HEALTH AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT BEST PRACTICES. TOTAL ATTENDANCE FOR THESE PRESENTATIONS IS ESTIMATED TO BE OVER 2000 INDIVIDUALS. THIS PAST YEAR WE'VE HELD 4 EVENTS WITH 448 PARTICIPANTS.; TPON CONTINUES TO SPONSOR PARKING DAY WITH RECORD PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE IN 2017; THE NASHVILLE URBAN DESIGN FORUM WAS FOUNDED IN 1995, AND MEETS MONTHLY TO DISCUSS THE ROLE DESIGN PLAYS IN THE CITY AND AROUND THE WORLD. URBAN DESIGN FORUMS PROMOTE CROSS-DISCIPLINARY UNDERSTANDING OF URBAN DESIGN AMONGST URBAN PROFESSIONALS; RAISE AWARENESS OF THE BENEFITS OF URBAN DESIGN; PROVIDE A FORUM FOR DISCUSSION OF DESIGN-BASED APPROACHES THAT ARE RELEVANT TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF NASHVILLE'S NEIGHBORHOODS AND THE CITY AS A WHOLE. THIS PAST YEAR WE'VE HELD 5 EVENTS WITH 514 PARTICIPANTS.; CITYTHINK IS A MONTHLY LUNCH PROGRAM DISCUSSING CURRENT URBAN DESIGN TOPICS THROUGHOUT NASHVILLE. THESE PROGRAMS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND TAKE PLACE AT NCDC 'S OFFICE. CITYTHINKS ARE USED TO GET FEEDBACK ABOUT DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT NASHVILLE, AND TO HELP ENVISION HOW TO MAKE A HEALTHIER AND MORE BEAUTIFUL CITY. THIS PAST YEAR WE'VE HELD 5 EVENTS WITH 195 PARTICIPANTS.; NCDC SPONSORS THE YOUNG URBANIST GROUP WHICH IS GEARED TOWARDS YOUNG PEOPLE (ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, STUDENTS, ARCHITECTS, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS, PLANNERS, REAL ESTATE AGENTS, CONTRACTORS, DEVELOPERS, ENGINEERS, CONCERNED CITIZENS, ETC) THAT HAVE A PASSION AND CURIOSITY ABOUT URBAN DESIGN AND CIVIC SPACES. THIS PAST YEAR WE'VE HELD 5 EVENTS WITH 108 PARTICIPANTS. NCDC IS WORKING TOWARD INCREASING THE PARTICIPATION IN ALL OF THESE PROGRAMS THRU THE 2018-2019 FISCAL YEAR. ADDITIONALLY, NCDC PREPARES AND PRESENTS VIDEO AND INFORMATION FOR ALL NASHVILLE/DAVIDSON CITIZENS.
