IN 2018-2019, INSIDEOUT LITERARY ARTS OFFERED AN ARRAY OF IN-SCHOOL AND AFTER-SCHOOL CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAMS THAT DEEPENED STUDENTS' CONNECTION TO THE POWER OF THEIR VOICES. INSIDEOUT'S WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM SERVED 1,745 STUDENTS AT 21 K-12 SCHOOLS IN THE DETROIT, OAK PARK, DEARBORN, AND RIVER ROUGE SCHOOL DISTRICTS. PROFESSIONAL WRITERS-IN-RESIDENCE ENGAGED STUDENTS IN WEEKLY CREATIVE WRITING LESSONS ALIGNED WITH MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION STANDARDS AND AIMED AT INCREASING STUDENTS' KNOWLEDGE OF LITERARY FORMS AND TECHNIQUES, HELPING STUDENTS EXPRESS THEMSELVES THROUGH WRITING, AND IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION. TEACHERS REPORTED AN INCREASE IN STUDENT WRITING, CRITICAL THINKING, ORAL COMMUNICATION AND OVERALL CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT. IN YEAR-END SURVEYS, STUDENTS INDICATED THEY LEARNED: TO REVISE THEIR WRITING TO MAKE IT STRONGER (72%), ANALYZE MODEL TEXTS (74%), TRY NEW STYLES OF WRITING (76%), AND EXPRESS IDEAS MORE EFFECTIVELY IN WRITING (73%). RESIDENCIES CULMINATED WITH THE PUBLICATION OF 3,406 LITERARY JOURNALS. INSIDEOUT'S AWARD-WINNING AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM, CITYWIDE POETS, SERVED 185 YOUTH FROM 32 ZIP CODES AT NINE SITES, AND THROUGH 38 PERFORMANCES REACHED 2,102 AUDIENCE MEMBERS. THE PROGRAM'S ADULT MENTORS INCLUDED ACCLAIMED WRITERS AND PERFORMERS: FRANNY CHOI, BRITTANY ROGERS, BAYAN FOUNAS, BER- HENDA WILLIAMS AND NADINE MARSHALL. WORKSHOPS FOCUSED ON A VARIETY OF THEMES, SUCH AS: FAMILY, CURRENT EVENTS, RACE, IDENTITY, AND CLASS. THE NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED YOUTH PROGRAM QUALITY ASSESSMENT (YPQA) TOOL WAS ADMINISTERED AT EACH HIGH SCHOOL LOCATION; THE PROGRAM SCORED ABOVE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE IN THE THREE OUT OF FOUR DOMAINS. NATIONAL POETRY MONTH (APRIL), CULMINATED A SPIRITED CELEBRATION OF WRITING, STORYTELLING, AND COMPETITION IN DETROIT'S CULTURAL DISTRICT: LOUDER THAN A BOMB: THE MICHIGAN YOUTH POETRY FESTIVAL (LTAB). THIRTEEN TEAMS OF HIGH SCHOOL POETS FROM ANN ARBOR, GRAND RAPIDS, KALAMAZOO, AND THE DETROIT METRO AREA GATHERED FOR A WEEKEND OF WRITING AND SLAM POETRY COMPETITIONS, ALL IN THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AND YOUTH EMPOWERMENT. THE YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD (YAB) OF EIGHT STUDENTS MET TWICE MONTHLY FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS FROM DECEMBER THROUGH MAY. STUDENTS RAN FOUR SCRATCH THE PAGE OPEN MIC EVENTS, LED COMPONENTS OF SLAM SEASON AND LOUDER THAN A BOMB, DESIGNED AND RAN THEIR OWN WRITING WORKSHOPS, AND MAINTAINED THE INSIDEOUT VIDEO LIBRARY.
