Mission

By delivering innovative education approaches and advancing aligned policies, KnowledgeWorks activates and develops the capacity of communities and educators to imagine, build and sustain vibrant learning ecosystems that allow each student to thrive.

About

KW in Schools:From its inception, KnowledgeWorks has focused on creating personalized learning environments that engage K-12 students and help each individual thrive in college, career and civic life. Six years ago, KnowledgeWorks entered the national conversation about personalized, competency-based learning (PCBL) behind a concentration of thoughtful policy briefs focused on state and federal policy reform, aligned advocacy, and partner engagement. This body of work, combined with over 16 years of on-the-ground experience in innovative school design, implementation, continuous improvement and collective impact, quickly established KnowledgeWorks as a thought leader and trusted resource for policymakers and other organizations launching statewide and local PCBL initiatives. These leaders are now turning to KnowledgeWorks for instructional, assessment, and community engagement supports to inspire PCBL systemic implementation within local, regional, and state cohorts. As a result, in FY2019 KnowledgeWorks continued its support of policy and practice in the PCBL ecosystem. The organization implemented its professional development and technical assistance approaches, tools, strategies, and capacity development in approximately 19 districts (also known as learning communities) across the country. In addition, KnowledgeWorks began a partnership with the North Dakota Department of Public instruction to implement and scale PCBL in the state, consistent with NDDPIs Choice Ready vision. South Carolina and Arizona have also joined NDDPI in scaling PCBL statewide. By the close of FY2019, the KW in Schools team was working on systemic design and implementation projects within Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Minnesota, Maine, Indiana, New York, and North Dakota. These local, regional, and state-wide cohorts supported PCBL learning of nearly 82,000 learners within 163 schools. These impactful numbers suggest strong demand for personalized learning and PCBL services in FY2019 and beyond.
