Mission

San Diego Hunger Coalition (SDHC or Hunger Coalition) leads coordinated action to end hunger in San Diego County supported by research, education and advocacy. Our vision is that everyone in San Diego County has enough food for an active, healthy life.

About

CalFreshSDHCs latest research, in partnership with UCLA, indicates nearly 500,000 people in San Diego County are food insecure. CalFresh aka SNAP or food stamps is our nations most effective solution to hunger. In San Diego County, most CalFresh recipients are children 44, seniors and people with disabilities. However, only 60 of eligible households are enrolled, because the application process is complex and difficult. SDHC makes it easier to get CalFresh by working closely with County of San Diego Health Human Services Agency to remove barriers and create new ways for people to apply. 2018 activities 1. Led monthly CalFresh Task Force meetings with 40 partner organizations to identify barriers to enrollment, resolve case issues, and share best practices 2. Trained 270 staff from 31 community organizations on CalFresh application assistance 3. Managed a state contract that provided over 400,000 to SDHCs 12 local subcontractors, including food banks, community clinics and social service agencies, resulting in 8,082 households accessing 23.8 million worth of food.
