Mission

Formerly Open A Door Foundation, SHE-CAN stands for Supporting Her Education Changes a Nation and our mission is to equip and empower young women from post-conflict countries to become leaders who change their nations. By creating pathways to tertiary educational opportunities, supportive mentoring and guidance, and leadership skills, SHE-CAN scholars emerge from our program as confident, vocal, and empowered change-agents ready to usher in peace, prosperity and women's rights into their community and nation.

About

Since 2011 SHE-CAN has selected 2-9 Rwandan scholars each year. In 2014 we expanded into Cambodia and have accepted 4-6 scholars each year ever since. We began recruiting the first class of candidates in Liberia in 2018. To date, 56 scholars have won a total of $15M in scholarships. They attend a total of 25 schools including Dartmouth, Northwestern and Wellesley. Additionally, ten new candidates from Cambodia and Liberia have been selected and are applying for 2020 admittance. SHE-CAN's 17 graduates are thriving in impressive careers and several are already leaders including the Personal Assistant to Rwanda's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Secretary to Rwanda's Minister of the Interior, and a Director of Health and Impact, a Kigali social impact organization. Each scholar in the program is matched with a team of 5-6 mentors who help her navigate the school and scholarship application process, support her while she is in school, and provide valuable networking resources to help her establish her career. SHE-CAN now has a community of 280 mentors. Along with mentor support, SHE-CAN provides in-country SAT test preparation and funds non-scholarship costs that each scholar's family cannot afford such as plane tickets, computers, books, health insurance, phones, dormitory supplies and winter wardrobes. SHE-CAN also saw an opportunity to engage US schools as partners and in 2015 formed the SHE-CAN Scholarship Coalition, comprised of a group of 13 partner schools who have each committed to award full scholarships to SHE-CAN candidates. Given their success, SHE-CAN plans to scale into three new markets, starting with Liberia in 2018 and Guatemala in 2020.
