About
An Open Book Foundation brings authors, illustrators and their books to students in qualifying schools in the Washington, DC area. Our vision is that children see themselves as readers who can express themselves in the written and visual arts. Every student attending an author event gets a copy of the book to add to their home library. School and classroom libraries receive a set of the author's titles. During presentations, authors interact with classes; while signing their books, they engage in one-on-one conversations. This personal connection encourages students to read, write and create more. It is critical that all children discover characters, storylines and creators who share their life experiences and cultures. Meeting professional book creators can introduce students to a future career path they may not have otherwise considered. Furthermore, book circulation in school libraries increases, home libraries are built and children's enthusiasm grows. AOB's staff includes former librarians, teachers and booksellers who identify the best authors and books for the students we serve. Our extensive knowledge of books, authors, curricula and the school populations we serve allows us to thoughtfully tailor each event to create the most valuable experience for everyone involved. In the 2018-19 school year, AOB served over 10,000 students in 272 author and illustrator presentations and added more than 12,500 books to school, classroom and home libraries.
