THE MISSION OF THE MATT CWIERTNY MEMORIAL FOUNDATION (MCMF) IS TWOFOLD: TO FIND CURES FOR THE EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS (EBV) AND EBV-ASSOCIATED DISEASES AND TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS (AYA'S) WITH CANCER. TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS, THE MCMF RAISES MONEY TO FUND MEDICAL RESEARCH NEEDED TO CURE EBV AND EBV-ASSOCIATED DISEASES, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON TREATMENT REGIMES AND CURES FOR ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS (15-29 YEARS OF AGE) DIAGNOSED WITH HEMOPHAGOCYTIC LYMPHOHISTIOCYTOSIS (HLH) AND T-CELL LYMPHOMA. IN ADDITION, THE MCMF SEEKS TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF ALL EBV-ASSOCIATED DISEASES AND THE NEED TO FIND CURES FOR THESE TERRIBLE DISEASES, WHILE PROVIDING PROGRAMS TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ADOLESCENT AND YOUNG ADULT CANCER PATIENTS.

THERE EXISTS A NATIONAL NEED TO PROVIDE EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION TO IMPROVE AWARENESS, PREVENTION, ACCESS, AND QUALITY OF CANCER CARE TO AYA'S. FROM 2013 TO 2017, THE MCMF DONATED $35,000 TO THE USC-CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL LOS ANGELES AYA ONCOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. IN 2018, THE MCMF DONATED AN ADDITIONAL 10,000. THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IS A NOVEL APPROACH TO ADDRESSING THE AYA GAP IN BOTH PEDIATRIC AND ADULT ONCOLOGY MEDICAL DOCTOR TRAINING PROGRAMS. THE MCMF BELIEVES THAT THIS PROGRAM WILL HELP MEDICAL DOCTORS BE EXPERTS IN THE FIELD OF AYA ONCOLOGY AND IMPROVE THE LIVES OF AYA'S WITH CANCER. IN 2018, THE MCMF ALSO DONATED $10,000 TO THE MONO PROJECT AT THE UNVIERSITY OF MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF LABORATORY MEDICINE AND PATHOLOGY. RESEARCHERS AT THE MONO PROJECT ARE CURRENTLY PARTNERING WITH INDUSTRY TO DEVELOP A VACCINE THAT COULD POTENTIALLY PREVENT EBV-CAUSES DISEASES, SUCH AS INFECTIONS MONO, EBV-ASSOCIATED CANCERS, AND MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS).
