About
In the past year, Girls on the Run of Central Illinois celebrated its 10th anniversary, the 4,000th girl to joyfully complete the program, and embarked upon our biggest season yet this spring, with 700 girls enrolled. In the past year alone, Girls on the Run impacted over 1,100 girls and more than 1,400 volunteers and community participants through our program held at various school sites and 5k events. Our 5k event participation is growing even higher, and we enjoyed our second year at Lincoln Land Community College. This not only provides a great venue for the event, but also created an opportunity for our girls to experience being on a college campus. Importantly, our growing reach and impact has come with many successes and tales of triumph. When surveyed, our coaches reinforce these successes; 99% of coaches strongly agreed or agreed that the girls at their program site were positively impacted by the curriculum and gave specific examples including: increased confidence and self-awareness; teamwork and leadership skills; civic engagement; and improved physical health and conditioning. Yet we often hear that the coaches are just as changed by their experience as the girls they work with. Last year, 95% of volunteers strongly agreed or agreed that their coaching experience was personally rewarding, "Having a young girl tell you how she handled a real life situation using a technique you taught her is impactful. Especially when you see the light on her face as she tells you how confident she feels knowing how to handle situations young girls face today. The energizing feeling is simply unexplainable until you experience it yourself." Another coach ran her first 5k at the culmination of our spring session, and has since completed several half marathons after building up her confidence and strength as a runner! As we move into our next school year, our council has even more encouraging developments on the horizon. Girls on the Run of Central Illinois was recently approved for territorial expansion in Scott County. With a new movement of community support and outreach in these areas there is vast new potential that even more girls will be able to benefit from the curriculum and support of the program in future years. The Girls on the Run logo has become a fixture in many t-shirt drawers and a well-known name to many parents who have stepped up to support their girls and our program this year. We have the encouragement of local sponsors as well as a dedicated, full-time staff hoping to continue this path of successful growth and quality program delivery for another amazing year!
