About this organization
Mission
InnerCity Weightlifting’s (ICW) mission is to amplify the voice and agency of people most impacted by systemic racism and mass incarceration.
About
InnerCity Weightlifting (ICW) partners with program participants through case management and careers in and beyond personal training. Individuals are elevated as experts in fitness and the social issues they've lived with. ICW is a culture and community in which power dynamics are flipped, social capital is bridged, and new leaders emerge in the fight to combat long-standing inequities. At the center of our organization is the Personal Training Apprenticeship Program (PTAP) and our case management services. As participants come to our gyms, rather than letting a set curriculum dictate what we do, we co-create Individual Advancement Plans (IAPs). IAPs drive how case managers partner with each participant. These plans cover what barriers someone is facing (homelessness, legal stipulations, etc.), what they need (ID, bank account, mental health support), and what interests each person has. ICW’s PTAP provides a path toward economic mobility. Participants in the program work at their own pace with our coaches to obtain the ICW personal training certification. Once certified, participants train clients of their own, bridging social capital and being paid a competitive wage for personal training. ICW follows a 4-stage model: Earning Trust, Building Hope, Bridging Social Capital, and Sustaining Economic Mobility. This model exists to aid the personal and professional development of our students. We are able to do this by connecting our students to our in-house case management, where our advocates work with them to assess needs and develop individual advancement goals. ICW has proven its model. In response to the 4 stages of our model – Earn Trust, Build Hope, Bridge Social Capital, and Sustain Economic Mobility – recidivism rates drop from 88% in the first stage to 8.2% in the final stage. ICW’s most conservative social return on investment is 16.5X. This doesn’t even begin to capture the holistic return, including cost on health care system, impact of gun violence on property values, total cost of judicial system, and impact on family members. ICW participants have gone from family incomes of less than $10K per year to gaining incomes as trainers greater than $90K. Participants have opened their own gyms and leveraged connections through clients to gain long term employment in the trades, tech companies, and various industries. Participants have become first-time homeowners, have taken their first vacation and have taken their children on vacation – an experience too many participants never had themselves growing up. Perhaps more important than the impact on participants at ICW, is the impact of ICW participants on society. Our personal training clients don’t just leave with a great workout, they leave with a new relationship that evolves someone’s moral beliefs, their understanding of the environmental factors, and compels people to both talk and act differently within their own social circles.
