About

YOUTH PROGRAM: WITH OUR CLE|LEAD PROGRAM, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM TARGETED CLEVELAND METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT (CMSD) SCHOOLS RECEIVE FREE, ARTS-BASED TRAINING IN CERAMICS, GRAPHIC DESIGN, AND PHOTOGRAPHY WHILE DEVELOPING SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL, LEADERSHIP, AND EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN SCHOOL, WORK, AND LIFE. SEL ENCOMPASSES FIVE CORE COMPETENCIES TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS ARE ACADEMICALLY AND SOCIALLY EQUIPPED TO SUCCEED: SELF-AWARENESS, SELF-MANAGEMENT, SOCIAL AWARENESS, RELATIONSHIP SKILLS, AND RESPONSIBLE DECISION MAKING. CLE|LEAD MEETS A NEED FOR SEL IN CMSD. ERIC GORDON, CMSD'S CEO AND NEWBRIDGE BOARD MEMBER, AND HIS LEADERSHIP TEAM RECOGNIZED THAT THERE WAS A GAP IN SCHOOL-PROVIDED SEL PROGRAMMING, AND DETERMINED THAT ARTS-INFUSED PROGRAMMING WOULD BE A WAY FOR STUDENTS TO BUILD LEADERSHIP, EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS, AND EMOTIONAL MATURITY. CLE|LEAD IS ROOTED IN AN EVIDENCE-BASED SEL CURRICULUM CALLED LIONS QUEST THAT FOCUSES ON CULTURAL AWARENESS, INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION, AND PERSONAL MANAGEMENT AND RESPONSIBILITY. THE CORE COMPONENT OF CLE|LEAD IS A SIX-MONTH AFTERSCHOOL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM THAT IS ORGANIZED AROUND THREE TWO-MONTH MODULES BASED ON THE LIONS QUEST CURRICULUM, COMBINED WITH HANDS-ON ART INSTRUCTION IN CERAMICS, GRAPHIC DESIGN, AND PHOTOGRAPHY. DURING THE 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR, NEWBRIDGE EXPECTS TO DOUBLE ITS ENROLLMENT FROM LAST YEAR AND SERVE 72 STUDENTS THROUGH THE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM, WHICH WILL BE OFFERED EVERY SCHOOL DAY FROM 3:30-5:30PM AND SELECT SATURDAYS (AN EXPANSION OF LAST YEAR'S THREE-DAY-A-WEEK PROGRAM) AT OUR FACILITY IN CLEVELAND. IN ADDITION, CLE|LEAD PARTICIPANTS WILL SERVE AS PAID SUMMER CAMP COUNSELORS IN NEWBRIDGE'S SIX-WEEK SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHERE THEY WILL COMPLETE ADDITIONAL SEL AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING AND CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THEIR EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS. CLE|LEAD PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTINUE ON AS LEADERS TO ASSIST TEACHING ARTISTS, FURTHER THEIR ARTISTIC WORK, AND SHOW AND SELL THEIR ART AT NEWBRIDGE'S EXHIBITIONS. NEWBRIDGE'S OVERALL GOAL FOR CLE|LEAD IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT LEADERS WHO CAN MORE CONSTRUCTIVELY HANDLE A VARIETY OF EMOTIONAL CHALLENGES USING SELF-AWARENESS AND INCREASED EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. CLE|LEAD COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION (PARTICULARLY OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME PROGRAMMING) AND THE ARTS, AND IS AN ESSENTIAL PROGRAM TO ENSURE THAT NEWBRIDGE ACHIEVES ITS MISSION OF HELPING PEOPLE REACH THEIR FULL EDUCATIONAL AND ECONOMIC POTENTIAL.
