TYONEK GROWN: FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS, TTCD HAS WORKED WITH THE NATIVE VILLAGE OF TYONEK AND OTHER PARTNERS TO DEVELOP AN AGRICULTURAL PROGRAM AIMED AT ENHANCING FOOD SECURITY AND PROVIDING FRESH ORGANIC VEGETABLES TO TYONEK. IN 2016, THIS PROGRAM WAS FUNDED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE USDA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, THE FIRST NATIONS DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE, THE TYONEK NATIVE CORPORATION, AND RASMUSON FOUNDATION. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, TTCD PROVIDED ASSISTANCE TO THE NATIVE VILLAGE OF TYONEK THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF TYONEK GARDEN, AND PROVIDED OUTREACH TO OTHER AK TRIBAL CONSERVATION DISTRICTS AND ALASKA NATIVE COMMUNITIES INTERESTED IN STARTNG GARDENING PROJECTS. IN 2016, TTCD MANAGED THE TYONEK GARDEN TO PRODUCE OVER 2000 LBS OF FRESH VEGETABLES, A PORTION OF WHICH WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE TYONEK ELDERS LUNCH PROGRAM AND TO THE TEBUGHNA SCHOOL SNACK PROGRAM. TTCD HIRED AND TRAINED TWO SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYEES AND ONE GARDEN SUPERVISOR TO ASSIST IN THE GARDEN IN 2016. TTCD ALSO IMPROVED SOIL PRODUCTIVITY BY ADDING NEARLY 7 TONS OF ORGANIC COMPOST, AS WELL AS ORGANIC NUTRIENT ADDITIONS.
