Mission

LAND IS A PUBLIC ART INITIATIVE COMMITTED TO CURATING SITE- AND SITUATION-SPECIFIC CONTEMPORARY ART PROJECTS, IN LOS ANGELES AND BEYOND.

About

SENSE OF PLACE:JOSE DAVILA - LAND COMMISSIONED GUADALAJARA-BASED ARTIST JOSE DVILA TO CREATE SENSE OF PLACE, AS PART OF THE GETTY FOUNDATION'S PACIFIC STANDARD TIME: LA/LA, A COLLABORATION ACROSS SOTHERN CALIFORNIA INSTITUTIONS THAT EXPLORED THE RELATIONSHIP OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND LATIN AMERICA. SENSE OF PLACE WAS A MULTI-SITE, LARGE-SCALE, PUBLIC SCULPTURETHAT SPANNED THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES, REACHING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN DIVERSE NEIGHBORHOODS. INITIALLY INSTALLED IN WEST HOLLYWOOD PARK IN SEPTEMBER 2017, OVER THE COURSE OF NINE MONTHS THE SCULPTURE WAS DISASSEMBLED TO VARIOUS SITES, MIGRATING TO FAR REACHING LOCALES. SOME OF THE SITE INCLUDED JOHN SOWDEN HOUSE, THE BOB BAKER MARIONETTE THEATRE, HOLLYWOOD FOREVER CEMETERY, LEWIS MACADAMS PARK, SILVERLAKE INDEPENDENT JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER, AND GRAND PARK, INNER CITY ARTS, BRAND LIBRARY & ART CENTER, PLUMMER PARK, THE SANTA MONICA PIER, LOS ANGELES UNION STATION, AMONG OTHERS. IN THIS SENSE THE PIECES BECAME A SOCIAL PLATFORM PROMOTING INTERACTION WITH THE PUBLIC. AFTER BEING MOVED AND EXISTING AROUND THE CITY OVER THE NINE MONTH PERIOD, THE SCULPTURE WAS REASSEMBLED IN WEST HOLLYWOOD PARK, CONCEPTUALLY BRINGING TOGETHER THE VAST NARRATIVES AND PERSONAL INTERACTIONS INTO A CULMINATING PORTRAIT OF THE CITY.
