URBAN RECIPE FORMS AND OPERATES FOOD COOPERATIVES (CO-OPS) FOR UNDER-RESOURCED INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES. THROUGH MEMBERSHIP IN A CO-OP, FAMILIES BECOME FOOD SECURE, JOIN A CARING COMMUNITY, AND GAIN THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER AND DEVELOP SKILLS TO APPLY WITHIN THE CO-OP AND IN THE LIVES OUTSIDE THE CO-OP. URBAN RECIPE (UR)FOOD CO-OPS ARE HIGHLY PARTICIPATORY WITH MEMBERS BEING ENCOURAGED TO TAKE OWNERSHIP IN THEIR CO-OP BY CONTRIBUTING TO THE FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROCESS AND CO-OP GOVERNANCE. UR OPERATED THREE CO-OPS IN 2018 WITH UP TO FIFTY FAMILIES EACH. TWO CO-OPS ARE HELD AT URS HEADQUARTERS IN THE GRANT PARK SECTION OF METRO ATLANTA. ONE CO-OP TAKES PLACE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF SOUTH ATLANTA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FOCUSED COMMUNITY STRATEGIES. ANOTHER CO-OP IS PLANNED FOR 2019 AND WILL BE AFFILIATED WITH A SCHOOL IN METRO ATLANTA. UR ALSO PROVIDES TRAINING WORKSHOPS THREE TIMES A YEAR FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE CO-OP MODEL. THERE ARE AS MANY 70 CO-OPS AROUND THE US AND TWO IN JAPAN THAT EXIST AS AN OUTGROWTH OF UR TRAINING.IN ADDITION TO FORMING AND OPERATING FOOD CO-OPS AND PROVIDING TRAINING FOR THE MODEL, UR HOSTS A WEEKLY COMMUNITY GATHERING AND MEAL CALLED THE WEDNESDAY LUNCH. LUNCH IS PROVIDED BY VOLUNTEER GROUPS AND IS OPEN TO ALL, BUT THE MAJORITY OF ATTENDEES ARE WOMEN AND MEN IN THE GRANT PARK SECTION OF ATLANTA EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS.
