Mission

The AFE Foundation works to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity from AFE by advancing research through our AFE Registry, promoting clinical education, expanding awareness, and supporting those affected by amniotic fluid embolism.

About

The AFE Foundation is the only organization dedicated to amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a life-threatening birth complication that remains a leading cause of maternal death and suffering in the United States and abroad. The AFE Foundation is comprised of affected families, respected clinicians, world-renowned researchers, and engaged advocates working together to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity (near death) due to amniotic fluid embolism. We do this through advancing research, promoting clinician education, raising awareness, and offering support to those affected. We envision a world where AFE no longer threatens the lives of mothers and their babies. The AFE Foundation is proud to underwrite the Amniotic Fluid Embolism Registry at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, Texas. The registry allows researchers greater insight into the individual cases of AFE as well as serves as a basis for clinical research. In 2018, the Registry began the next important step in discovery through its prospective research study and specimen collection. These specimens will be used in various proteomic and genomic studies. 3 scientific abstracts, papers and opinions based on data from the registry were published in medical journals in the areas of obstetrics and gynecology. The AFE Foundation continues to be a leading patient advocacy organization and holds multiple board positions in influential maternal health and patient safety and quality institutions and associations; most notably, the CDC Partnership for Reducing Maternal Mortality and Morbidity, the Council for Patient Safety in Womens Health Care, the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC), Institute for Perinatal Quality Improvement, and the Obstetric Life Support Study. Additionally, the Connecticut Department of Health passed Section 68 of Public Act 18-168 which mandates all labor and delivery clinicians receive education on amniotic fluid embolism as provided by the AFE Foundation. The foundation continues to promote education among the many discipline in labor and delivery. This year more than 3,000 clinicians received direct education from the AFE Foundation through lectures, symposiums, panels, webinars, and publications. Approximately 30 families received direct support from the organization to assist with physical, emotional and financial hardships associated with experiencing an amniotic fluid embolism. The AFE Foundation continues to be the primary source of accurate and reliable information for patients, their families, and clinicians around the world. With website visits over 70,000 a year in over 50 countries, it remains the greatest source of global awareness and education of AFE. More detailed information about programs and services can be found on our website at www.afesupport.org.
