Mission

Global Citizen Year envisions a world led by global citizens who are equipped to address today's greatest challenges and seize tomorrow's greatest opportunities. We are on a mission to make it normal for students from all backgrounds to choose a global bridge year after high school: an experience that builds self-awareness, global skills, and grit.

About

Since 2010, Global Citizen Year has shaped the life trajectory of nearly 1,000 young people through its Fellowship. The team and program have grown tenfold and it is positioned as the pre-eminent gap year experience for future global changemakers. Global Citizen Year alumni are thriving in college and early careers. They have been honored as Fulbright Scholars, David Peace Prize winners, and Gates Millennium Scholars. They are working with top companies and organizations across every sector, from Tesla, Amazon, and JP Morgan to Ashoka, Teach for America, and the United Nations. Significantly, 92% of alumni report being stimulated and engaged at work (compared to 39% nationally), and 85% believe their work is making a difference in the lives of others. Global Citizen Year has grown its cohort by about 25% each year, while maintaining a commitment to diversity and inclusion. To date, 80% of Global Citizen Year Fellows have received need-based financial aid, 47% are eligible for Pell Grants, and 35% have become first generation college students. Additionally, Global Citizen Year is driving a national conversation on the need to build a new leadership pipeline with a formative international experience as the cornerstone of their education. In 2019, Global Citizen Year and Founder/CEO, Abby Falik, were featured by Fast Company, Getting Smart Podcast, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Outside Magazine's Best Places to Work.
