About
At Science is Elementary (SiE) we believe that science is not just a subject but a thrilling adventure. By fostering curiosity and scientific thinking at a young age, we’re not just teaching science; we're preparing the next generation for a future where they'll be the innovators, problem solvers, and thoughtful citizens our rapidly advancing world needs. SiE's work focuses on historically marginalized communities and we have a 16-year track record of closing gaps in science interest and achievement. Thanks to the demand for our Science is for Me! program, we now reach over 50,000 children and their families annually, mostly in California, but also in Michigan and North Carolina. Our holistic approach addresses the need for high-quality STEM education in the early years by engaging children, families, teachers, the scientific community, and the community at large, through three programs: - Learning Lab provides hands-on experiments and robust classroom discussions while teaching scientific thinking. Lessons are led by SiE staff and supported by volunteer STEM professionals trained to teach young children. Results: bit.ly/SiE2019. - Professional Development combines group training, individualized coaching, and a learning community to improve teacher practices and capacity for high-quality science education. Results: 50% increase in science hours taught and 90% increase in teachers’ confidence. - Science is for Me! offers engaging hands-on science activities seamlessly integrated with literacy, and nurtures a sense of belonging in STEM. It brings science learning into homes and communities, engages families in three languages, and supports teachers and afterschool program staff in teaching fun, inquiry-based science. Results: bit.ly/SIFM-Eval2023. Why do we start with such young children? Science “provides young children with opportunities to develop critical thinking, executive functioning, and problem solving skills that cut across subject areas” (ecstem.uchicago.edu) and gaps that begin in kindergarten and are not addressed persist at least until the end of 8th grade (bit.ly/SciAchGaps). Girls as young as 6 avoid activities that they associate with being “really, really smart” (bit.ly/IntellectAbil). Research (bit.ly/ScienceEarlyYears) shows that early STEM learning is crucial for students’ academic success and that when kids are engaged in science, they're more likely to want to continue learning it, leading to careers in STEM and better lifetime earnings (bit.ly/STEMEarnings). Since inception, SiE has focused its work on low-income communities of color, valuing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Almost 80% of our students come from low-income families and 85% are people of color.
