The Miracle League of Des Moines Kiwanis operates a baseball league and facility for children and adults with special needs, without cost to the participant. During 2018, over 400 players participated in 110 games during the league's spring and fall seasons. The league was fortunate to have the assistance of over 3,500 volunteers during 2018. Many of the volunteers served as a 'buddy' to our special needs players. During the year, the league hosted several special events for our players and their families, including an end-of-the-year trophy party, a Halloween party, and a league tenth anniversary celebration. The league also facilitated evening events featuring games with buddies from the Des Moines Police Department and the Des Moines Fire Department. Another evening event featured player buddies from the Iowa Barnstormers of the indoor football league. During 2018, the organization held a successful capital campaign to replace the special field playing surface, and to update, improve and renovate the facility. In April and May of 2018, the worn-out field surface was replaced with a new and safer surface.
